The Hopi signs for the coming of Pahana, the White redeemer, were revealed over 50 years ago. In the early 1950s, a Protestant Reverend picked up a Hopi Indian hitchhiking along an open highway. As they road together the Indian confided that he was the last of his clan and wished to pass on the traditions of his elders, before he passed away. So as the two men drove on together, the Hopi recounted the nine signs that would herald the coming of Pahana, the white redeemer. Eight of the nine Hopi signs have already occurred, exactly as predicted. The 9th sign is a space ship that will fall to earth. In the words of the Hopi clansman:
"And this is the Ninth and Last Sign: You will hear of a dwelling-place in the heavens, above the earth, that shall fall with a great crash. It will appear as a blue star. Very soon after this, the ceremonies of my people will cease."
Has the ninth Hopi sign occurred? The deorbiting of the Mir space station in 1999, could have been the fulfillment of the 9th Hopi sign, however, the Hopi rituals have continued beyond that time, and we have yet to see an international war break out among the white race. Assuming that the Mir space station deorbiting was not the fulfillment of the Hopi prophecy, what about the crash of the Columbia shuttle in 2004, In fact, one on ground observer of the crash said: "It was a spot of light, like a star moving." However, once more the Hopi rituals continued beyond the date of the Columbia crash. On the other hand, when the Hopi prophecy states "very soon after," it is impossible to know exactly what that means. "Very soon after," could be a week, a month, a year or a decade.
While it is not possible to ascertain the exact date of this final sign, especially if it is yet to occur, one might still speculate on its meaning. Why should the crash of a space station portend the end of Hopi religious ritual. I will try and give an answer.
Much of religious ritual relates to astronomical phenomena. In fact, the Heavens, the goal of much of religious practice, are up in the sky, and so it makes sense that many religious rituals concern themselves with the practitioner's connection with stellar events. The days of the week, are named after the seven moving planets, the months relate to the 12 moon cycles in every solar year. Seasonal holidays such as Christmas and Chanukah bear a connection to the days before and after the winter solstice. The Jewish Sabbath is held on the day named after Saturn, the slowest moving of the 7 planets, and on that day all Jews rest and think of that which is beyond temporal change. The Jewish Passover relates to a negation of the prevalent practice in Egypt of worshiping the Lamb, which was the sign the Sun entered into on the first day of spring in those days.
When man travels into outer space, everything changes. The daily light dark cycle for people on a spaceship orbiting the Earth is around 50 -85 minutes. On one side of the spaceship, that facing the Earth, there are now 8 moving Heavenly bodies, including the Earth and the Moon. The "phases of the Earth," occur every 80 minutes, and during most of the spaceship day, the Earth eclipses the Sun. On the other side of the spaceship, there is no earth. Should space travelers colonize Mars, they will find there are now 8 moving heavenly bodies counting the 2 moons of Mars. So people on Mars might want to have an eight day week. Furthermore, the Mars year is equivalent to approximately two Earth years, but the Mars months will be much shorter as the moons orbit Mars every day. Since there are two moons, there might be two systems of months should Martians choose to create months based on the number of times the Martian Moons rotate around Mars each Martian year. They might even have a Martian holiday every time the point of conjunction of the two moon orbits rotates once around the planet.
These speculations merely scrape the surface of what will happen when Man in space tries to create rituals of living that accurately describe their stellar experience. But what happens when a man carries his earthly religious rituals into space. If the purpose of religious rituals is to make man mindful of the Heavens, what purpose are they serving if their practice blinds the participant to his own personal heavenly experience? This tendency might cause a space astronaut to become unmindful of his environment and over time this could lead to negligence leading to the crash of a spaceship. One spaceman on the doomed Columbia shuttle brought a Jewish Hanukkah menorah aboard. The Hanukkah holiday is fixed based on the cycle of the moons and seasons as experienced on Earth. A man in Heaven trying to observe Hanukkah cannot be fully mindful of his own stellar experience.
What happens when enough space horrors occur to make man on earth become cognizant of the purpose of the religious rituals, and make him recognize the relativity of the rituals to his own experience on Earth. At that time, man will be forced to learn the meaning behind the rituals and they will cease to be mere rituals and will become once again practices based on man's contemporary spiritual experience. Considering such a scenario, we can appreciate how one or more horrendous space accidents might make man on Earth reconsider his practice of religious rituals. This, in my opinion is the meaning of the 9th Hopi sign.
I conclude by noting that the Hopis are not alone in suggesting that religious rituals will cease in the future. In the Jewish religion it is taught that all festivals except for Purim will disappear in the future. And in his recent book, the Viking author Great Sun taught that all religious rituals, which divide men and religions, will cease in the future.
