A recent report released by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) revealed that rates of Mesothelioma cancer continued to rise despite attempts to limit and ban the use of asbestos in the US. According to the CDC, there were 18,000 mesothelioma deaths from 1999 to 2005, with more than 2,700 deaths in 2005 alone. The CDC expects mesothelioma deaths to peak in 2010 and begin to decline in subsequent years as products containing asbestos are gradually phased out.
Mesothelioma cancer is one of the most dreaded forms of the disease, with life expectancy for those who have contracted it averaging less than a year following diagnosis, although the patient's prognosis may be improved by early detection and aggressive treatment. The main cause of mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos, with those working in the construction, automotive, chemical, refining and ship building industries deemed most likely to develop the disease. However, recent reports have indicated that even those indirectly exposed to asbestos, such as those who handle clothes used by those working with the mineral, can contract Mesthelioma. Mesothelioma has a very long gestation period, making early detection very difficult; typically symptoms can appear from 20 to 50 years after the patient's initial exposure to asbestos. Many symptoms of mesothelioma also resemble other, less serious conditions, making diagnosis even more difficult.
There are four main types of Mesothelioma cancer:
1. Pleural Mesothelioma is the most common form of the disease, comprising approximately 67% of all cases. In this form of Mesothelioma, the cancer develops in the lining of the lungs. Symptoms include persistent dry cough, coughing up blood, fatigue, persistent pain, shortness of breath and unexplained weight loss of at least 10% of body weight.
2. Peritoneal Mesothelioma is the second most-frequently reported form of the disease, appearing in some 10% to 20% of patients. Peritoneal Mesothelioma develops in the abdomen and symptoms include abdominal pain and swelling, nausea, unexplained weight loss and bowel obstruction.
3. Pericardial Mesothelioma is an extremely rare form of Mesothelioma cancer and develops in the pericardium, a membrane that surrounds the heart. Symptoms usually result from the thickening of pericardial layers and the build-up of fluid and may include heart palpitations or irregular heartbeat, chest pain, difficulty breathing, cough, fatigue and night sweats.
4. Testicular Mesothelioma is the rarest form of the disease, with only a few cases ever recorded. Hence, the only known symptom of the disease is the appearance of testicular lumps.
Once the disease has been diagnosed, a number of treatment options can be considered. It should be noted, however, that all cases of Mesothelioma cancer are considered terminal and there is no known cure for the disease. The most common treatments prescribed for the disease include radiation therapy, chemotherapy and surgery, depending on the type of Mesothelioma the patient has. However, a combination of treatment options are usually adopted, a procedure known as multimodality therapy. This treatment approach has been shown to be more effective in extending the patient's life expectancy than following a single treatment. Some new therapies for Mesothelioma cancer have also emerged in recent years, including gene therapy, immunotherapy and phototherapy. Because of the experimental nature of these treatments, however, they are not generally available and are usually offered only to those patients who participate in clinical trials.
