Taking care of a baby is a source of wonder, especially for new parents. When taking a baby home from a hospital, they often wonder what to do next. Should they feed the little one? Should they put her in her bed? How does one get him or her to burp?
Diaper changes are clearly part of a baby's life. It is also probably the most dreaded activity in the field of parenting. The good news is that diapers now are easier to handle compared to the diapers you used as a baby! Before doing anything else, gather your supplies first. The supplies are: the diaper (of course!), ointments, baby wipes, powder, etc., everything that is required when you change the baby. After all, you do not want to leave the child alone and naked when you forgot to bring the anti-rash ointment from the medicine cabinet.
Laying the baby down is the second step in this activity. Some people have certain places on where they change their kids, like a changing table or a changing pad. Use the safety strap on the changing table when you're using it. When the child is strapped, unfasten the old diaper but do not pull it off yet.
Now the next step is to take the ankles and lift his or her legs to show the bottom and begin to wash the bottom with wipes. You can use the front part of the diaper when the area is heavily soiled. When the baby is now clean, you can now pull the soiled diaper under the baby.
Replace the old diaper with a new diaper. Follow the directions on how to fasten the diapers. Make the fit snug because if it's too loose, it may fall off and it would be quite messy. Don't make it too snug, though. You want the baby to feel comfortable at all times. Sometimes, you have to fold the top part of the diaper to accommodate the umbilical cord. This is true for newborns.
Now put the baby's clothes back. Now that the baby is comfortable, it's time to clean up. You do not just throw away a diaper. It has to be done correctly. Take the soiled diaper and use the fasteners to make a little ball out of the diaper. Put it in a diaper pail and wash hands, or maybe use a hand sanitizer if there is one in easy reach.
One may not be an expert on the changing table especially when the baby is new to the parent's lives. But with practice, diaper changing may prove to be an enjoyable and easy experience!
