Sweating is a natural process in the human body and it is managed by the millions of sweat glands all over the skin. When the body heats up because of exercise or hot weather, the sweat glands kick in and start perspiring to cool the body down again. Heat is not the only factor to induce sweating because it can also be caused by emotional stress, nervousness, excitement and nausea and vomiting. It can be very troublesome to be sweaty all the time, so here is some more information on how to stop sweating.
Sweating is a very common process and everyone deals with it on a daily basis, but when you perspire too much, then it becomes a whole different problem. The condition has a name, hyperhidrosis, and it afflicts about 2.8% of the population, and the downside is that it can be hereditary. A part of the brain called the hypothalamus controls the workings of the central nervous system and they are jointly responsible for perspiration. This process lowers the internal as well as external body temperatures. There are a number of ways to treat and manage this problem, so let us take a look at them.
Ordinary antiperspirant body sprays and similar products contain aluminium chloride which assists in drying out those moist places on the body. Unfortunately in the case of hyperhidrosis, it wouldn't be enough to treat the problem, but do not despair, because there are other ways of controlling it. Botox not only works on wrinkles, but it can be quite effectively used to control underarm sweating for 4-9 months at a time.
A procedure was developed where a person is exposed to a low electric current by putting their hands in water and in severe cases, medicines are added too. The minerals in the water then clog up the pores where sweat is produced and in this way inhibits sweating. This treatment is known as iontophoresis and initial sessions last for 20 minutes and are done many times in the first week and then once every three weeks for maintenance.
Anti-cholinergic oral drugs have been used successfully to control hyperhidrosis but they should only be taken under a doctor's supervision. This drug works by affecting the neurotransmitters in the nervous system which control perspiration. The main problem with these drugs is that they have unpleasant side effects such as dry mouth, blurry vision, constipation and drowsiness.
Once all these aforementioned methods have failed, the options are then to proceed with more serious treatments. These are all performed by doctors or specialists and can be anyone of the following: sweat gland destruction or removal or a process called endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy (ETS). Of all these procedures, the sweat gland removal is usually the last choice in dealing with hyperhidrosis and it is a serious process.
Excessive perspiration can have a major influence on a person's self-confidence and well being. People get nervous which makes them sweat even more and once this happens they get even more nervous, not a very good cycle. It is an uncomfortable and distressing problem so much so that if the people affected find their lives disrupted by it, they should approach their medical doctor to find out how to stop sweating.
