Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body has a problem with utilizing sugar or glucose, which is the main source of energy of the cells. This condition takes place because either the body has stopped reacting properly to insulin or the production of insulin has ceased. Before, it was also known medically as adult-onset or non-insulin-dependent diabetes type.
Insulin is a hormone secreted by the pancreas. This hormone is important as it's the one which allows glucose in the bloodstream to enter the cells so it can be used as energy. However, since its metabolism is affected, glucose instead pools in the bloodstream instead of permeating the cells. Or it could also be that the pancreas fails to produce enough insulin.
You may have this condition for many years already and still not know about it. That's because the symptoms tend to develop very slowly. Adults are more at risk for this, especially once they're past the age of 45; hence, it's formerly called adult-onset diabetes. However, children, adolescents and young adults may also suffer from it. As of now, there's no known cure for it, although it's manageable.
It's still unknown to experts why the body begins to fail to react to insulin properly or why the production of it by the pancreas diminishes. Obesity and inactivity tend to contribute to it. If someone in the immediate family has it, you may also have it. Race also is a risk factor, although it's not known why. Native Americans, Americans, Latinos and African and Asian descents are races more susceptible to developing the condition.
There are certain signs which can tell if you have it. You'll feel thirsty and urinate frequently since glucose in the blood attracts fluids out of your cells. You'll feel hungry more because your cells can't use glucose for energy. Others include exhaustion, recurring infections, slow wound healing, weight loss and dark patches of skin in some areas.
While there's no known cure for it, it can be managed nonetheless, particularly mild cases. It's recommended for someone who is obese to have physical exercises to lose weight. The more fatty tissues you have, the less reactant the cells become to insulin. Instead of simple carbohydrates, your diet should focus more on complex carbohydrates. It's because these can give you energy for extended periods of time.
If you believe that you have type 2 diabetes based on the symptoms mentioned above, see a doctor immediately. If left untreated, there are some serious complications involved, such as heart disease, damage to the eyes, kidneys and nerves, osteoporosis and others.
