How do tsunamis play out in the media? Many people have the perception that the world is experiencing more and more of these natural disasters, with more and more disastrous consequences. This perception or misperception helps to fuel many prophecies of doom and gloom. But is it really true? The recent tsunami in Japan, for example, was the largest in modern Japanese history; however, geological records show that Japan has had similar killer tsunamis in its ancestral past.
So what fuels the perception that the world is having more and more natural disasters? At least three factors fan this belief, one is the media, one is the existence of larger cities with taller buildings and crowded dense population along shorelines that result in large death tolls when disasters strike, and the third is more accurate record keeping and monitoring.
In keeping with this line of thought, we can see that at least in part, the tsunami problem or earthquake problem is a media problem. The horrors of tsunamis and earthquakes grow more readily apparent with the increasing capabilities of modern telecommunication to portray graphic details of an event, almost simultaneously, on the Internet. With each successive disaster, more and more precise video reporting of the earthquake or tsunami as it strikes are available on the web and on You Tube These images are especially disturbing, because modern man desires a life that is stable and controlled. He wants a remedy for poverty, sickness, wars, pestilence and also natural disasters
When a natural disaster strikes even a small portion of humanity, news about it spreads like wild fire across the Internet and creates a frightening effect as people in other parts of the civilized world fear that this could happen to them.
A fairly standard media response has grown up in recent years towards tsunamis, earthquakes and similar disasters. Even as the Internet provides accurate reporting of the details of the event, people in other countries rally together to send humanitarian aid to the stricken country. Participation in this ritual response gives people a good feeling as it insulates them somewhat from the pain of what has just taken place.
The charitable response to natural disasters while on the surface very laudable, has a striking side effect, it leads to the belief that tsunamis and natural disasters are bad, and the people who have been afflicted were innocent victims of a quirk of nature. However, religions, especially mystical religions do not teach this. Most religions teach that there is a spark of truth in all bad. Mystical sects go even further. There is a famous story found in many religions. The arch angel Gabriel came down to Earth to visit the leader of the community. He allowed the man to walk around with him provided he would not question what he sees.. The man first saw the arch angel tearing down the wall of a poor families house and couldn't stifle a "How could you do that Gabe?" Then he saw the Arch Angel saving the life of a murder, which caused the man to make another outburst. Finally a third action triggerd a similar protest and Gabriel informed the man they must part ways. But before doing so, Gabriel explained his actions. The wall he tore down was hiding a pot of gold which the poor family would now find. The murder whose life he saved would go on to kill a man who was planning to murder a righteous person. The third incident had a similar explanation.
Probably many people silently believe there was a purpose in the Japanese Earthquake. Even the mayor of Tokyo stated his opinion that the disaster was a punishment for greed. However, most people probably felt uncomfortable living with such thoughts, and it is much more comfortable to give charity.
One writer who has been outspoken on this question is Great Sun, the author of "Super Life Secret Codes,' a manual for survival in 2012, the year marking the end of the Mayan Long Count Calendar cycle and guide for living in the era to come. Great Sun pointed out that there are two problems with the modern media coverage of natural disasters and humanities response to the coverage. On the one hand, as they become more prevalent in the media, people develop an "insensitive side to face these disasters." In the end many people crave worse and worse disasters to satisfy their desire to see something new. On the other hand, people come up with superficial explanations about the cause of the disaster and fail to come up with deep and lasting solutions.
In the recent Japanese earthquake, for example, scientists knew that Japan had had whopper tsunamis in its geological past. However, for reasons probably at least in part financial, they decided to build walls against 5 meter tsunamis, the largest in recent history, and they were ineffective against 10 meter tsunami waves. This not only caused destruction at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, but also death of many residents who lived behind the protective sea wall. As recently as three months ago, scientists considered installing a new cooling system, which if in place could have potentially protected against the release of radioactive isotopes from the plant, which began to occur after the disaster.
While all of these considerations are useful, they are still targeted at the symptoms and not the causes of these problems. According to author Great Sun, the essential problem is man's loss of connection to the Universe and insensitivity towards nature. As a result, it becomes easy to develop technological projects which may have harmful consequences for the environment. On a large scale, this concept might seem ideal and impractical, but consider something closer to home, the relationship between a couple. If a man really loves his spouse, he will go out of his way to avoid doing anything to hurt her. Likewise, if we rekindle our love for the Universe, than avoiding technologies or actions that might harm the Universe, or our fellow creatures, will become second nature.
