BMW vehicles may be considered luxury vehicles, but they are still comprised of systems, just like its non-European counterparts; systems which may break down or encounter hitches along the way. Make sure that 'all systems go' and you can easily cut down on costs due to BMW repairs, if you engage in regular BMW maintenance.
Fluids - BMW vehicles use synthetic fluids. Included in the owner manual is a list of fluids to be used in your BMW specified by the manufacturer. It is also a must that OE fluids, like oil and coolants in particular, be mixable with off the shelf products, so emergency BMW service is possible. But, hydraulic oils such as power steering, brake fluid and transmission fluid should have certain specifications, according to viscosity and type. It is vital that you find out which products should be used with your BMW according to the specifications in the manual. Remember that, for every fluid, there is a specific set of instructions. Oils and power steering fluids in particular, have dipsticks to determine levels and compositions. With coolants and brake fluids, you would have to locate the master cylinder and reservoir tanks first. Keep in mind that this involve an understanding of how your car systems work.
Hoses - Coolant leaks can be attributed to loose clamps and old hoses; and you know overheating is an un-pretty, not to mention costly, event. Examine hoses regularly and replace them when necessaru. Radiators are usually at the front of the BMW. The hoses are attached to the radiator. There is an upper hose, and one located at the bottom. Note that this should be done only when the engine is cold. Squeeze each hose and if they feel brittle, it indicates that it needs replacing. This is applicable for every BMW hose. Also, check the clamps at the hoses' ends. If they are damp or wet, you have to tighten, if not altogether replace the clamp. Use visual inspection to check for cracks, tears and fraying and replace when needed.
Engines - Remember that with the exception of fuel and windshield wiper fluids, BMW fluids are in an entirely closed system - they should not be able to go anywhere. If you notice you are running low on some, it could be an indicator of a leak. To check for engine leaks, you need an understanding of the fluids used. The ever-present types are gas, oil and brake. Others may not have coolants or power-steering and automatic transmission fluids. Leaks could, at times, be spotted through visual inspection. They have different colors anyway. Coolants are usually green. Windshield wipers are bluish, greasy honey-colored fluid is engine oil and dark-colored, think fluid can be gear oil. Clear or yellowish and very smooth fluid is usually brake fluid. Look for wet areas cling to the underside of the vehicle's carriage as well.
Belts - BMW belts are one of the more expensive parts there is. However, you can avoid major repair bills if you ensure they are in good condition. An indicator that they are not is a screeching sound when the gas pedal is pressed. This usually means that they need to be tightened, or worse, replaced. Note that the engine should be cool before attempting to check the belts' condition. They are usually located at the front of the engine. There will be numerous belts as they are used to operate the fan, the water pump and the AC for starters. Check the tension for the belts. Note that they are not supposed to 'give' by more than an inch in either direction.
BMW Car Brakes - No one would argue about this being a critical part. After all, they keep you safe. Brake rotors in particular (in European cars) are not as thick as the domestic ones so they cannot be turned, they would need to be replaced. Never delay fixing problems on BMW car brakes. Known indicators of brake issues are squeaking or rhythmic noises that never seem to disappear.
