In the past, log cabins were associated with live in the frontier, where images of men in a battle with nature usually come to mind. These days though, log cabin accommodations have dramatically improved. Various log homes are furnished with fittings so modern that one cannot help thinking that they belong in a more contemporary setting. But , such facilities also make log cabin vacations all the more relaxing. Aside from log home fittings and modifications, here are some other things you would want to consider.

Consider the location. There are secluded locations that are only half an hour's drive from the city. But , if you have a particular purpose, such as fishing, mountain climbing or flora and fauna watching, then you have to choose settings which can allow such. Popular cabin locations are lakeside, riverside, mountain and coastal.

You also have to find out about nearby clinics, hospitals and gas stations. If you are considerably far from civilization, you should at least find out where the nearest village is. Since some cabin rental companies do not offer catering services, you would also need to bring food, or find out the locations of the nearest delis and grocery stores.

When you specifically ask for log cabins with hot tubs, keep in mind that the said hot tubs can vary as well. There are indoor whirlpool baths and there are outdoor hot tubs. The latter is more popularly called Jacuzzis and they are perfect for friendlier weather.

When booking for log cabin rentals, ask for suggestions that would make your stay more comfortable. Ask whether you need to bring your own utensils and bedding. Find out about the availability of kitchen appliances such as outdoor grills. Ask about catering services. Find out where the nearest deli or store is.

If you intend to go hiking and you are not familiar with the area, talk to the locals. You can join a hiking group if you feel that your mountaineering skills are not very good. Note that there are mountain resorts with good hiker-friendly maps.

Remember that you generally are not allowed to bring your pet along. However, there are nature reserves that are dog-friendly. Make inquiries about this matter. Ask for a complete list of rules and regulations especially if you are in a nature park, for a hassle-free vacation (legal-wise).

Log cabin vacations are typically associated with outdoor activities such as hiking, and kayaking. There are luxury cabin rental companies that offer facilities like golf courses and tennis courts though. You may be able to do some fishing as well. You can always just stay 'home' and soak in the tub though, and live the true meaning of 'taking a break'.

If the log cabin that you are eyeing is not more than half an hour's drive away and is easily accessed, it can also help if you view it before you commit. That is the only way you'll get to know first hand if it is something you can enjoy. After all, log cabin accommodation standards do vary; some may not be as warm or well-designed.
