Introduced in 1948, the toy, an EMD F3 carrying the colorful paint scheme of Santa Fe "Warbonnet," became the undisputable icon of the era. The company also offered a wide range of HO scale trains. However, despite the variety of precision-oriented and well-designed toys, the company saw its sales decline after a decade of leadership. In 1959, deemed the last year of the "true Lionel model train," the company saw a change in management and business direction.

In 1993, the company finally closed after years of battling competition, internal problems, and bankruptcy. Today, most Lionel vintage trains are worth a lot of money. Versatile and rare toy locomotives normally sell for more than a thousand dollars. Aside from how much they're worth, serious collectors prefer Lionel model trains due to their beauty and durability. Although the Lionel Corporation is no more, the Lionel brand continues to attract many model train enthusiasts, adults and children alike.
