Picture yourself looking at a train, the first thing you will notice is the tracks in which the train moves along. It looks like a snake making patterns along a landscape. The next thing that captures your fancy perhaps is the locomotive itself. It is the main motor that makes the train run along the tracks. But a locomotive is not complete without the railroad cars connected to it, that is why choosing several railroad cars that you would put into your collection is important. It will spell how your train layout will look like overall in the end. Basically, there are two types of model trains. First is the passenger type, which means exactly as it is, it carries passengers to and fro. The other type is called a freight model train, this on the other hand carries goods from one point to another.
Let us head on to passenger type model trains. There is what you call lounge types which is described as passenger cars that have ample space for socialization or activities inside the train like drinks and entertainment for the passengers. As a train collector you may want to delve on the details of your lounge cars, this way you will have a surely unique piece in your hand. In some quarters, lounge cars are also called bar or club cars because of their function . Another type is the coach which is similar to what you can observe in commercial airplanes with rows of seats for passengers. Usually coach cars may be further delineated as mass transit systems or long distance luxury systems. It will all depend on what type of coach car you want your model train to possess . Another one that falls under the types of model trains called passenger cars is the dining type. This resembles a small restaurant in a narrow space. Passengers can enjoy drinks and food at this area which is also the reason why it is known as restaurant cars. The pullman car, on the other hand is a type of passenger train car that provides sleeping accomodations for the passenger. This is good for those passenger who are travelling long distances or those who would have to stay overnight. The observation car is the one you find at the tip or end of passenger train. It caters to passengers who would want to have a full view of the scenery by peering at the large windows that make the observation car. Typically it is U-shaped to give the passengers a better view of the scenery.
Finally, when we speak of different types of model trains we cannot skip on what are called freight trains. After all, it is the one that carries goods and transports it from one station to another. Merchants, and businessmen benefit from these type of trains for economic purposes. For hobbyists, freight trains are wonderful additions to your railroad trains because it adds variety to how your scale model will look like. There is what we call box cars which are for general purpose goods delivery. It has roofs and doors from one side or at the tail end. The hopper, is a freight car that is used normally in the transport of commodities like coal, grains or sugar. It can either be open or covered depending on the design. The stock cars on the other hand are the ones used for transporting animals like sheep, livestock and horses. Reefers are cars that are refrigerated. Finally there are tank cars or wagons that carry volatie substances like gas or oil. Now that you know the different types of model trains, you can begin your collection based on your own preferences.
