Train collecting is an exciting way to spend your time. It calls for commitment and imagination that is only bounded by your knack and penchant for details and observation. While starting out with your first train set, it is very important to be familiar with the most common types of Train track layouts out there. The most usual among them is the Basic oval layout. It is just as it is described an oval shape layout. This leaves no room for imagination but it is good enough while you are still starting. Meanwhile, if you plan to create a platform in your oval shape layout, it should contain two more straights where you can place your platform. In this case, it will now be an Extended Oval layout. Advancing from the basic oval layout is the Oval with passing loop. The idea behind this layout is to make a passing siding that is long enough for another train to pass. If you prefer to up the ante, you can create a long loop with a passing siding in the inner loop. This will make your train look larger. The Bell Shape loop type, is a track layout that is formed by two quarter circles with one semi-circle that forms a bell like shape. The Double loop on the other hand, is made up of two loops where one is inside another. A connecting point between the loops will allow trains to cross from one loop to another. There are other track layouts you can use but the ones described are the basic ones you can begin with.
When dealing with Train track layouts, you need to be knowlegeable about the type or scale of a track you will use. This will save you time and effort when you start your project model train. The scale of your track will also dictate what size your train or cars you will need in model train. When buying tracks, you will often encounter the term gauge, it is used to describe the distance existing between the rails of the tracks. However, so that you will not be confused about gauge and scale, you can use the terms interchageably. Presently there are six scales used. These will also serve as your choices when starting out with your model train kits. The scales are designated by letters G, O, S, HO, N and Z.
The biggest scale among them is called the G scale. Lionel model train sets become very popular with this scale in the early days. It is also the popular gauge or scale used in trade shows and exhibitions. Its mearsurement is 1:22.5. The next in line is the O scale which may be 1:43 or 1:45 depending on the place where you will procure it. In the US the O scale is at 1:48. This scale has also become popular as more and more manufacturers add detailed quality with their O spec gauges. The S scale is a scale of model trains that is not as popular as the previous ones. The limited number of ethusiasts at this scale has made it a not so popular choice among collectors. Because of this, S scale tracks has always been dwindling in supply. The most famous scale is the HO scale which stands for half of O scale. It has obtained a huge following because it is smaller and easier to maintain. This means that costs for its care is cheaper and accessible to most folks out there. The N scale which is 1:148 which is very close to the size of HO scale. Finally, the tiniest scale to date is the Z scale. It has a measurement of 1:220 and is described as the most spacious among the scales mentioned. It has found a serioud following because you have a lot of options when it comes to adding landscape or tracks that you see fit. The one drawback however with this type of scale is that they are more fragile than other gauges or scale. Whichever train track layouts you choose, your model train kit will enjoy years of use and the fascination that you can pass on from one generation to the next.
