Some people take the outdoors seriously. Hence, the usual summer camp or RV camping for them is a violation of the rules when it comes to extreme camping. Extreme campers choose locations that will challenge their physical capabilities and surviving skills. They camp on places that don't have too much civilization and are composed of mostly wild animals and huge trees. These are not the only obstruction that survival campers face-in fact, those are just the inferior ones that they face.
When it comes to extreme camping, the terrain, the altitude, the temperature, food and resources can all become an obstacle. Others who climb on snow capped mountains need to consider the kind of temperature they are going to face when nearing the top- one of the highest mountain peaks is about 29,000 feet. Oxygen levels at this height significantly changes, making the expedition life threatening for extreme campers. Campers face extremely low oxygen levels at this point, at around 20,000 feet, the air gets very thin, falling half of the normal oxygen content present in the air. The higher a climber goes, the thinner the air gets. Extreme camping requires far more equipment than regular camping; this helps ensure the survival of the camper. Survival campers camping on extreme grounds need to bring hydration systems and oxygen tanks to keep their breathing atleast "close to normal" when climbing great altitudes.
When the temperature drops to freezing point, hikers face another tough survival challenge-keeping themselves from getting frost bites. Frost bites occur when blood vessels close to the skin begin to compress; making it impossible for regular blood flow to occur. When this happens, the skin tissue gradually freezes and dies; when immediate action or first aid is not given, frost bites can lead to amputation of the affected body part. Fingers and toes are the most common areas that get affected by frost bites. During the first stages of frost bite, a camper must keep the affected area warm. Victims must avoid rubbing or massaging the affected area, as this may cause further harm than help. Adequate clothing when travelling to areas known to have freezing temperatures must be greatly considered by campers prior to camping. Doctors and medical practitioners are usually available at base camps of mountains to provide first aid or emergency assistance for those mountaineers who might need it. Hikers also go through a physical exam prior to climbing dangerous heights to make sure that they are physically fit for the expedition.
The number of mountaineers who have passed away because of the extreme situations in survival camping is not too low. Most campers under estimate the power of nature and proceed with their expedition relying on the belief that they are physically fit. Campers or hikers must consider the fact that being physically fit also depends on the environment that they are going to challenge. A camper may be physically fit for tent camping, but not for extreme camping.
