When camping may be all about survival in the outdoors and fun and games; camping safety should never take the back seat. The wilderness does have a lot to offer, but it can also be perilous if safety precaution measures are not met. Below are some camping safety tips that may be useful for those who are interested in camping.
Even though park rangers are always on the lookout for wild animals and burglars in camp sites, it's always better to be safe than sorry. Campers need to make sure that their camp site doesn't seem inviting to wild animals (like bears), most especially if they are tent camping. Food is the main reason why wild animals drop by for a visit. Bears, in particular, have an exceptional sense of smell. They can easily sense even the slightest scent of food, up to almost twenty miles away. This may spell like defeat for some campers, but there are ways to prevent them from tracking campers and their food baskets. Those who often go out camping are aware that they need to place their food (or anything that smells like food) inside bear proof containers. If a bear proof container is not available, they can place their food in a container and tie it up a tree that is away from their camp site. Even if the bear tracks it down, it wouldn't bother going inside the campers' tents. There are others who cook atleast fifty to sixty feet away from their camping grounds. Campers need to veer away from taking toothpaste, soaps and perfumery that smell like fruits or any kind of food. Sweets are a lot easier for bears to track down because of its' scent. While trekking, campers need to make noise so that bears will hear and veer away from them, they hate being surprised and may attack if caught unguarded. Mother bears with cubs tend to be more protective and aggressive, and are best to be left alone. Bears usually stay in berry filled patches, so campers need to cross this out when looking for places to go camping on.
Experienced campers, especially those who do extreme camping, keep a good fire going through the evening to keep wild animals away from camp, others urinate around the camp-this is like showing territorial claims on the camp site.
While nature's sweet breeze can be experienced on the mountainside, campers need to make sure they are safe from insects that prey on unsuspecting victims. While scratching and putting some ointment may seem to solve any insect bite problems, there are insects in the wild that could pose a grave threat. A simple bite from a mosquito carrying malaria can lead to fever, coma, or at worst- death. If travelling to a mountain or place that is known to have mosquito carrying malaria, campers must get vaccinated with anti-malaria prior to setting off for camp. Insect repellants and mosquito nets are also a big help in keeping insects away. Insects tend to be bigger than usual when in the wilderness, thus, camping safety needs to be done prior to and during the camp.
