Across the country, females are considered less important than males. This is because girls are married off eventually to other families and were far less help out in the fields. The long time policy of China only permitting couples to have one child has also played a role.

Today, Chinese men and women still go to huge lengths to make sure that their one permitted child is a male. Their government's severe over population led them to enact a one child policy in 78. The policy and the ancient notion that boys will take better care for their parents has led to some peculiar and devastating developments for the affected citizens.

The decades of allowing only one offspring will lead eventually to a whole generation of citizens without cousins, uncles, aunts, or even siblings. Many social psychologists and theorists have stressed that these circumstances are promoting a dangerous level of self centeredness that has never been seen before in history.

The son preference has led to a significant gender-based birth disparity in the country as well. The higher number of male births has led family planning groups to predict that, by the year 2020, there will be over thirty million more men in China than women. Eventually, this will result in young men emigrating to other countries in search of wives.
