Hundreds of Iraqis rallied Thursday in southern Iraqi provinces, protesting against the lack of public services and unemployment.
Dozens of angry protestors rallied outside the municipal building of the town of al-Nassir, north of Dhi-Qar's provincial capital city of Nassriyah, some 375 km south of Baghdad, hurling stones on the building before setting it on fire, a provincial police source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
Seven people, including policemen, were wounded by the turmoil, in which the protestors demanded better living, jobs and public services, the source said.
Authorities in the town blocked the entrances and imposed curfew on the town, as Iraqi security forces arrested several protestors, the source added.
Also in the day, several hundreds of protestors rallied outside the provincial government compound in Iraq's second largest city of Basra, demanding that the governor be fired because of his alleged failure to solve the problems of unemployment and deteriorated public services.
The demonstration in the oil-hub city of Basra, some 550 km south of Baghdad, was largely peaceful during the day, but the demonstrators pledged to continue their protests until the provincial government meet their demands.
In Kut, some 180 km southeast of Baghdad, hundreds of protestors held a sit-in and set up tents outside the government building, insisting that their demands be met by the central and the provincial governments after a day of bloody turmoil in the city.
Lawmakers of the Iraqi parliament representing Wasit province, which Kut is its capital, arrived to the scene outside the government compound and met with the protestors to convey their demands to the parliament in Baghdad.
One of their main demands was to replace the provincial governor Latif Hamad al-Turfah, and among others were to provide subsidized food staples, electricity and jobs.
On Wednesday, two people were killed and more than 24 others were wounded, including policemen, when hundreds of angry Iraqis took over government buildings and burned the house of the provincial governor in Kut, the capital of Wasit province in eastern Iraq.
Since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003, Iraq has long faced the problems of lacking power plants and qualified water resources, which usually make many Iraqis protest in summer for the brutal heat wave.
Recently, several thousands of Iraqis sporadically took to the streets in several provinces across the country protesting unemployment and a sharp rise of food prices, as well as demanding better public services.
