I can prove that the cataclysms and world doom predicted to take place on Dec. 21, 2012 are not likely to occur on that day. That's the good news. The bad news is that the predictions made by so many independent seers, which all agree with each other, are liable to challenge the Earth at some time and in some way in the foreseeable future. I am not the first person to bring "proof" that the 2012 prophecies of doom will not take place as predicted. Many scientists, astronomers and even Mayan elders have said the same thing. I will merely bring additional support for their conclusions.
The Mayan calendar is considered by many New Age leaders to be the most natural of all calendar systems. As such, it is considered capable of describing changes in the Heavens that portend periods of transition and transformation, which in the past has been associated with cataclysmic events on the Earth.
While the Mayan calendar is amazingly accurate, it is still human made and, as I will show, subject to the use of fudge factors, which bring its harmonic cycles into harmony with Heavenly events. As such, the day on which the calendar predicts the events will occur is not always exact. For example, within the Mayan Long Count calendar every Tun consists of 18 Winal which is made of 20 K'in. The K'in is the Mayan day, and therefore a Tun is 360 days or close to a year. How did the Mayans bridge the gap between a Tun and a calendar year? They created a 5 day transitional period, a kind of celestial fudge factor like the Gregorian leap year. However, the Mayan's had no compensation for the fact that each year actually consists of 365 1/4 days.
The astronomical occurrences associated with Dec. 21, 2012 consist of three cycles, which come together on one day. The Earth-Sun axis will be in line with the horizontal axis of the Milky Way. The Sun and hence our whole solar system, (the elyptic), will be in the constellation Sagittarius, which contains the star that represents the center of the Milky Way, and the Earth will reach the Winter Solstice. This is a rare conjunction of these three cycles, and represents the transformation from the fifth Mayan Sun World to the 6th Mayan Sun World.
On closer examination of the alignment of the Earth-Sun axis to the horizontal axis of the Milky Way we see another Mayan fudge factor at work. The Sun and the Elyptic orbit around the center of the Milky Way every 240 million years. During the course of this orbit the Sun moves at times above and at times below the horizontal axis of the Milky Way. Scientist estimate this occurs every 64 million years. Recently the Sun passed through the horizontal axis and is now 2 degrees above it. So in fact, it is not technically possible for the Earth-Sun axis to be exactly in line with the horizontal axis of the Milky Way. Why would the Mayan calendar be celebrating this event after the fact? It is not unusual for human calendar systems to celebrate celestial events after the fact, because it is only after the fact that man can appreciate that they have taken place. For example, the Pagan holidays of Saturnalia took place three days after the Winter solstice. It is only three days after the Winter solstice that ancient men could perceive that the days were getting longer and therefore they selected the third day to be a holiday.
The Mayan Long Count cycle has another "fudge factor," included or implied in its calculation. The Long Count cycle consists of 13 Batuns. 13 Baktuns adds up to a "Great Cycle" of 1,872,000 days, ( 5200 Tuns, or about 5125 years). If we multiply 5,125 by five we come up with 25,625 years, a figure which is close to the 25,772 year time frame of another important astronomical cycle, the precession of the Equinoxes. This correspondence is important in understanding the Mayan calendar.
The precession of the Equinoxes is caused by a wobble in the Earth's axis. The orientation of the Earth's axis with respect to the fixed stars never changes. However, as the Earth orbits around the Sun, the part of the axis tilted towards the Sun changes. Winter occurs in the Northern Hemisphere when the top of the Earth's axis points towards the Sun and summer occurs in the Northern Hemisphere when the bottom of the axis points towards the Sun. Due to the circular wobble of the axis, seasonal changes take place at progressively different locations on the Earth's orbit. Now we consider how this cycle affects the Mayan Calendar.
The plane of the Earth Sun axis is at a 60 degree angle to the Milky Way horizontal plane. Therefore, although the Sun is 2 degrees above the horizontal axis of the Milky Way, the Earth-Sun axis points towards the horizontal axis of the Milky Way twice a year. One time the Earth is between the Sun and the Milky Way center and the other time it is the reverse. Due to the precession of the Equinoxes, however, the season of the year when this takes places shifts over time. In 2012, scientists say this correspondence will take place at or near the Winter Solstice.
The Mayan's call this event the shift from the 5th Sun World to the 6th Sun World, as noted above. Since each "Sun World" is equal to 13 Baktuns or 5,125 years, then 5 "Sun Worlds," are equal to 25,625 years, just 147 years short of the complete precession of the Equinoxes. We appear to have located another place where the Mayan fudge factor comes into play.
While the Mayan calendar is close to nature it is still man made and not a perfect descriptor of heavenly events. So any cataclysms might devolve from celestial events is not likely to be preceisely pinpointed by the Mayan calendar. That's the good news. The bad news or wake up news is that all the New Age seers are giving the same mesage, and this indicates there is likely to be truth in what they are saying. While scientists pooh-pooh the likelihood that a concordance of tsunamis or earthquakes will occur all at once and devastate the planet, the greatest threats to man's existence are our own actions. Nuclear warfare and the unpredictable effects of man-made global warming are two of the greatest challenges facing humanity in the future. Both these dangers grow out of mans technological advances and consequential separation from nature.
In this line of thought, we should pay close attention to the advice given to us by the New Age seers about how to survive in the future. They suggset that we reconnect with the Universe and rely more on natural products, Some seers such as Great Sun, author of the Viking release "Super Life Secret Codes, " have suggested that at the same time that we continue our technological advances, appreciate how the miraculous advances in technology exemplify many truths about our own connection to the Universe. Telecommunications, for example, teaches us that invisible rays really exist and can facilitate communication between two separate places in the physical world. Great Sun's advice for adapting to the future can be found in his book.
