The Mayan Long Count Calendar Cycle and Mayan Cosmology

The Mayan Long Count Calendar cycle comes to an end on December 21, 2012 and there is much rich cosmology and symbolism associated with this event. The Mayans were advanced students of the stars, and their observations formed the basis of their religious and cosmological systematology. What is stricklingly strange about their findings is the emphasis they placed on our connection with the Milky Way, and the dark star in its center, which our solar system rotates around, and which they called Xibalba be or "Black Road

The Mayans believed this dark center of our Galaxy, known to modern scientists as the dark hole Sagittarius A, was the door to evil. Every 5,126 years, 13 B'ak'tuns in Mayan astronomy, there is an astronomical configuration in which the Sun comes close to Sagittarius A at the time of an equinox. According to Mayan teachings, when this occurs, it causes the creation of a new "sun world." In Mayan thinking, when the Sun "Kinich-Ahau" will pass close to this dark rift, on December 21, 2012, it will receive a spark of light from within the Black Road so as to once again set things in motion on the new "sixth sun world"

The Mayans considered the Black Road to be the umbilical cord of the Universe. According to their belief, the umbilical cord connecting us all to the Universe goes through the center of our Earth, through the heart of the Sun, to the galactic core, and if we can imagine, to the Heart of All Beings. Mayans called this universal heart the Hunab Ku. They believed that via the Hunab Ku all souls are connected to a galactic memory circuit, like a universal computer called the Kuxan Suum. The Kuxam Suum integrates and coordinates all conscious vibrations and all evolutionary programs.

The circuit between each created being and the Kuxan Suum is a two way resonant circuit. Every memory event goes to the Kuxan Suum and back again from this cosmic center to all star formations, solar systems, suns, planets and created beings.

Lest we believe this cosmology is a quaint anachronistic belief system, salvaged from the wreckage of time, we actually find suggestions of it in books by moderns healers recommending solutions and proper attitudes to the impending end of the Mayan Long Count caalendar. One healer, Eden Sun, proponent of a return to a 13 month calendar system, talks about the importance of reconnecting to nature. She also emphasizes that every soul is connected to the heart of our responsive and ever changing Universe.

Another healer, Great Sun, author of the Viking release "Super Life Secret Codes," describes in length how every soul is dynamically connected to the Universe. "The truth is every creature and object," he writes, "has a communicating channel with the Universe and they each play a different role to finish, (their), own mission." Great Sun uses examples from modern technology to show how the connection works"Just because we can't see something, he said, "doesn't mean it (doesn't) exist....Take.. human being(s), for example, our connection to the Universe is similar to the connections between cell phones and satellites."

Great Sun describe the dynamics of each soul's connection to the Universe in ways that are so close to the Mayan cosmology that they leave no doubt that each are talking about the same phenomenon. "at any minute, what we think evaluate and decide, " writes Great Sun, "(can) be translated into a signal and passed to the Universe; the Universe (will) then pass the related (response) back and influence (people and objects) we subsequently encounter."

According to Great Sun, the inventions and developments of modern technology which might otherwise convince man he is a self-made and independent and can manipulate and exploit nature as an external object, actually demonstrate he is connected to the Universe in a dynamic and responsive way.

Great Sun independently describes the same chain of connection to the Universe the ancient Mayans did. In his book, he presents a series of meditation and visualization exercises which can strengthen the umbilical connection to the Hunab Ku. In all these exercises, he points out that our natural connection to this Universal center goes through our Sun, which nurtures our Solar System. This is not to say that the author advocates solar worship, rather an appreciation of the natural structure of life.
