I'm shocked! But hypercholesterolemia has truly been affecting most of the general population. This is a medical condition wherein an elevated level of low density lipoproteins (LDL) or bad cholesterol is observed. With this, suppressed high density lipoproteins (HDL) or good cholesterol levels are also expected. Two other types of cholesterol are the very low density lipoproteins (VLDL) and the triglycerides. Both are greatly associated to LDL.
High LDL or bad cholesterol levels serves as a major risk factor that contributes to the development of several heart-related conditions. Too much cholesterol in the blood forms plaques or hard fat deposits on the arterial walls. This then narrows the blood vessel space that ensures good and enhanced blood circulation especially among the vital body organs like the kidneys, brain, lungs and heart. Over time, this build up may cause atherosclerosis or arterial hardening. When these happen, there is a greater tendency that body organs are to receive much less oxygen-carrying blood. This then results to several heart-associated symptoms like angina or chest pain. Furthermore, if this scenario aggravates, a total blockage or infarction may happen, which may result to heart attack and worse, to death.
There are several factors that lead to the development of high cholesterol. For one, your genes may partly determine your susceptibility in having such medical condition. Particularly, scientific studies reveal that 1 in every 500 individuals develops familial hypercholesterolemia and other heart related disease. One's gender and age are also considered as risk factors. Generally, as the person's age increases, the tendency to have high cholesterol levels also rises. With regards to gender, males are more associated to lifestyle vices like smoking and too much consumption of alcohol that constricts blood vessels and aggravate the situation. On the other hand, women tend to have higher cholesterol levels as they reach the menopausal stage due to hormonal changes. Scientific researches reveal that before menopause, women tend to have lower total cholesterol levels than men of the same age. After menopause, women's LDL levels tend to rise until about 60 to 65 years of age. After the age of about 50, women often have higher total cholesterol levels than men of the same age. That is how significant these factors are in establishing higher cholesterol level. All these given instances are non-modifiable. Certainly, science experts can do nothing about one's gender, hormones and genes. But never be discouraged! Several ways may still be done.
Unhealthy diet and inactive lifestyle are two of the most significant modifiable factors that contribute in having high cholesterol. Enhance HDL and lower bad cholesterols by observing a healthy balanced diet. Refrain from foods with saturated fats like dairy products, lard and margarines. Instead, take those that are derived from plant sources like olive and canola oil. You may also incorporate fish oils and high-fiber fruits and vegetables into meals. Observe these with a regular physical activity and positive mental attitude. Also, eliminate smoking and too much alcohol consumption if possible. It is also recommended to take an expert's advice for further assessment and prescription of duly medications. Have all these measures and you're on the right road leading to a healthier and lower cholesterol level.
