Much of the accumulated wisdom in books on business could be written on the back of a stamp. They are often long, dull, self-serving and anecdotal. Having the attention span of your average Arthropod I find them hard going. But I love quotations. They are to weighty business tomes what Haiku is to Morte d'Arthur by Tennyson.

Personal qualities
For good reason many business-related quotes refer to the personal qualities of the business person. Personal fulfilment features regularly "Chase your passion, not your pension. If it doesn't absorb you, if it isn't any fun, don't do it" and "Work can provide the opportunity for spiritual and personal, as well as financial growth". Tenacity and dogged determination resound in "Bite off more than you can chew and then chew like hell" and "Proceed as if success is inevitable". Thinking is believing "Whether you think you can or whether you think you can't, you're right" and there is always a place for lack of rational thought and restraint "All you need in this life is ignorance and confidence and then success is sure".

Strategies for success
Don't think too much "Trust your hunches. They're usually based on facts filed away just below the conscious level" but perhaps a little thought would be wise "Vision without action is a daydream. Action without vision is a nightmare". I myself coined "One man's focus is another man's blinkers" but others might prefer "The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing". Courage is regarded as an essential quality "Let us never fear to negotiate. But let us never negotiate out of fear" and "If you don't risk anything, you risk even more". And Darwin himself highlighted the importance of change and adaption when he said "It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the most responsive to change."

Advisers
Someone once said that lawyers are "People who can write a 10,000 word document and call it a brief". Accountants fare no better "Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted". And to those pedlars of complex and arcane financial instruments the question must be asked: "How many legs does a dog have if you call his tail a leg?" The answer is of course: "Four, because calling a tail a leg does not make it a leg".

Investors

The Entrepreneur
Someone once said "Being in your own business is working 80 hours a week so that you can avoid working 40 hours a week for someone else". Is this the same person who "goes on working for the same reason that a hen goes on laying eggs"? Perhaps instead they should plan a bit more "If I had eight hours to chop down a tree, I'd spend six sharpening my axe" and be more ruthless with their time "Either you run the day or the day runs you". Delegation might help too, but you've got to have the right staff "Get the best people and train them well" and be a good leader "The growth and development of people is the highest calling of leadership". Remember "The employer generally gets the employees he deserves". But keep cheerful "He who laughs, lasts" and finally "The secret of success is this: there is no secret of success".
