Hanging applications, super long startup, frequent crashing and the feared Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) - When these are no longer caused by software and system registry, your PC is definitely aging. Your computer gets obsolete, unfortunately, right after you buy it. New models and components are being released rapidly and new programs require more processing power and memory. With the right planning, you can catch up with these recent applications and make your computer faster.
Rearm your CPU!
The processor is the primary consideration in upgrading your PC. It is the computer's brain, which is installed in a special socket in the motherboard. Modern processors are equipped with multiple-cores, which are usually called dual-core, quad-core, X2 or X4 processors. Now, how are they different from traditional, single core processors?
Multi-core processors can split the job from computer applications. It is like you are using multiple CPUs in just one computer. If you have more cores, multi-tasking is a lot easier. This is perfect for heavy calculations, speed-hungry programs and HD gaming. The processor speed is indicated in units of hertz in the CPU package. However, be careful in checking the processor's compatibility with your Motherboard.
Raise the RAM!
RAM or Read Access Memory is the container that temporarily holds data while applications are running. With high RAM, switching between windows and starting up can be done rapidly. If you are low on RAM or if you are using a heavy application or game, you will notice that the system is slowing down. The screen may also freeze and sometimes, when the system runs out of virtual memory, the computer can fail to the much feared BSOD.
You can make your computer faster by putting up at least 2 GB of RAM. Earlier in this decade, 1 GB RAM has been the standard size. However, recent games and multi-media applications provide more load on the virtual memory. For example, Adobe After Effects can consume up to 5 GB for optimal performance. New Operating Systems also require larger memory, even on their inactive mode.
Power up the Graphics!
Most motherboards are equipped with built-in video cards. These components share memory from the RAM through the BIOS settings. However, on-board graphics are intended for basic usage. This includes office applications, movie watching and web browsing. Usually, the amount of shared memory is limited to only 256 MB. This will also strip some usable virtual memory from the RAM card.
You must purchase a competitive dedicated video card to run graphically-rich programs. Dedicated cards will let you watch on HD and play breathtaking games on your desktop PC. When purchasing a graphics card, examine its speed, pixel shader and anti-aliasing capability. Anti-aliasing is the virtual polygon-smoothing of images and videos. With it enabled, your graphics become more crisp and detailed.
Now how can video cards make your computer faster? Dedicated cards allow you to use the full potential of your RAM, without sharing to an on-board video processor. Performance boost is best observed in graphics processing programs like movie creators, special effects editors and HD games.
