Is your computer already showing its age? The common symptoms of aging PCs include frequent crashing and hanging, slow system and program startup, and choppy running of applications and games. If you are encountering these problems, do not immediately dump your PC and resort to buying a brand new unit. Maybe, all you need are some computer upgrade tips. With the right repairs and component replacements, you can boost your PC's performance without spending too much.
1. Identify if the problems are really caused by the hardware
Sometimes, slow startup and running can be caused by an erroneous registry. Registry bugs can be the culprit if you experience sudden hangs and crashes. Sometimes, a registry repair software or reinstallation of the Operating System (OS) can do the trick.
Run a system diagnostics to identify other problems. You can use the BIOS to look at the processor's temperature and frequency. A disk defragmenter can also check the status and number of bad sectors in your hard disk. These tests may prevent unnecessary purchases of new components.
2. Power up your cooling system
CPU fans and coolers may take the backseat in many computer upgrade tips, but their significance must be clearly stated. High temperatures tend to slow down your system and, not to mention, decrease your system's lifetime. Make sure that your processor has a dedicated fan with optimal settings, as selected in the BIOS. Also make sure that you have at least 1 standard exhaust fan for your CPU. You may invest in a liquid cooling system, especially for high-end computers and heavy-duty servers.
3. Raise your RAM to at least 2 GB
Back in the early 2000s, 1 GB RAM has been the standard size for personal computers. However, recent applications take more memory. RAM or Read Access Memory temporarily holds data from all active PC applications. Low RAM results in an uncomfortable, choppy handling of applications. Switching between windows take forever and hanging may occur.
2 GB of RAM will provide comfortable space for basic office and entertainment applications. That is also the minimum requirement for most modern games. Also notice that OSs like Windows Vista and Seven consume more RAM even when no applications are working.
4. Check component capability before purchasing
Remember that not all RAM cards, graphics processors and components are universally compatible with all PC models. Remember that your motherboard can only support a range of products. If it has a socket AM2 with DDR2 support, then your motherboard cannot work with an AM3 Processor. The same way, a DDR3 RAM card may not function well, or not function at all, on a DDR2 slot.
Modern graphic cards need a PCI Express slot, which cannot be found in many old motherboards. Sometimes, the effects of high end components will not be pronounced if they are installed on old boards. Sometimes, it is better to purchase a new board and re-use some of the old components. There is no need to hire a specialist in selecting compatible cards and boards. You just need to read product descriptions carefully. This technique from computer upgrade tips will save you a lot of effort and money.
