The steroid is manufactured by the body in the liver by HMGCR or HMG-CoA reductase, a powerful enzyme. The chemist began postulating that certain organisms could be made to break up the enzyme and lead to healthier cholesterol levels.

The announcement literally stunned the medical world. Labs all over the country quickly started funding similar trials of their own. Soon after, certain agents were isolated and named as potential drugs.

On average, statin medications have the power to reduce bad cholesterol by seventy points. It also leads to a sixty percent reduction, on average, in heart attack events and a lowering of strokes by a walloping seventeen percent. Typically it is suggested that a person commits to numerous lifestyle changes before taking the drugs. The statins are usually only given to patients who can prove they attempted to lower their bad levels on their own with diet and exercise.

The most common effects of the drug are increased liver enzymes and muscle problems. Several types, in fact, have been recently recalled due to extremely high reports of rhabdomyolysis and other issues. Others include neuropathy, cognitive loss, pancreatic problems, and sexual dysfunction as well.

Alternatively, ingesting acidic fruits or juices like oranges and grapefruits can increase the pill's affects causing a higher chance of statin overdose.
