This week the ASPCA is reporting a major setback in the quality of life for countless American-Made Pets! In an unprecedented move the Missouri House of Representatives voted 85-71 to eliminate the newly passed bill "Proposition B" that would help put an end to the states disturbing production and distribution of Puppy Mill created pets.
According to the ASPCA, "Missouri is the number-one puppy-producing state in the county, supplying pet stores from coast to coast with hundreds of thousands of dogs annually, and is notorious for its lax animal-care standards and proliferation of unlicensed breeders. Unless it is vetoed by Governor Jay Nixon, the bill the House just passed (SB 113) will not only supersede the PMCPA—which includes such humane provisions as increased cage size, prohibition on the use of wire flooring and restrictions on breeding frequency—it will make parts of the state's commercial breeding law even weaker than they are now."
This author has witnessed the horrid conditions these poor animals suffer at the hands of unregulated breeders. The females are mated over and over without benefit of health care or decent food, much less the tiniest bit of love and attention. In fact this process has an actual terminology, "Bred till their dead." And if that's not enough to disturb you, did you know the poor mother and her pups are never allowed to leave their filthy wire floored cages? Cages which are stacked on top of each other allowing waste from the cages above to rain urine and feces on them.
The cute pups in your local pet store window are simply pulled from this unhealthy and traumatizing environment, given a bath and sold to the public for thousands of dollars. Most of which end up with extreme diseases, vet bills or even dead, leaving the newly adopting folks who've fallen in love with this newest member of their family, traumatized and heart broken.
The folks of Missouri made their voice and hearts clear by voting to pass Prop B which clamped down on the states puppy mill factories and was set to go into effect in November. To the voters surprise the House killed the bill. Therefore, might I suggest the state's voters (the boss) demand by petition these very same representatives (hired employees) spend one week going to work in their beloved puppy mills?
I'm betting they will be jump for joy to spend some quality time out in the hot sun with the smell of urine, feces and death wavering in the air. Perhaps they can take their lunch under the shade tree and wave to the crying, sick and hungry dogs who have never felt a blade of grass under their feet, and never will. Yes Missourians, I say send your Missouri House of Representatives on a paid vacation (at the voters expense, naturally) and let them take in some quality time with these poor creatures of their overzealous labor. They certainly deserve a little perk, especially in light of working so very very hard to be known as the #1 "Puppy Mill State of America."
