Before delving into a discussion of the pros and cons of adopting an animal from animal shelters and animal rescue centers, it is important to understand why animal rights groups are opposed to the idea of purchasing cats, dogs, and other animals from pet stores. In a nutshell, the opposition lies in the purported source of these pet shops - animal mills ("puppy mills" for dogs, "kitty mills" for cats). These are commercial breeding facilities that place a premium on profits over animal welfare, resulting to inhumane treatment of the animals being bred.
Since the exposition of this form of factory farming of pet animals, more and more people have opted for pet adoption. Of course, the question now would be whether one should adopt animals in no-kill shelters or those that practice responsible euthanasia - but this will not be discussed in this article. The focus now is on the advantages and disadvantages of pet adoption.
Advantages of Pet Adoption
Adopting a pet is cheaper. It is common knowledge that adopting is cheaper than purchasing an animal from a breeder or a pet store. Not only that. Since most shelter animals have already been spayed or neutered and have been vaccinated, you can also save on spay and neuter fees and vaccine costs.
Chances of a perfect match are higher. Since the shelter staff are often determined to find the perfect home for the animals they take in, you can be sure that they will really help you find the perfect pet.
Shelter animals are often house-trained. That most shelter animals were victims of abuse is a misconception; in fact, more than half were turned over to shelters by responsible pet owners who do not have a choice and would like their pets to find new homes. That said, it is likely that you don't need to spend that much time and effort training your new pet since it is already housebroken.
You are saving a life. For most people, the decision to adopt a pet stems from the desire to save lives. In this case, it does not matter if the pet is from a no-kill shelter or one that practices euthanasia. Adopting a pet will result to space freed up for another animal to occupy (in the case of the former); or to a decrease in the number of animals in a shelter, which may lessen the chance of overpopulation - a deciding factor when euthanizing animals.
Disadvantages of Pet Adoption
Information may be lacking. Although animals in shelters are often examined to determine problems in health and disposition, there is a chance that you will not receive a complete history report of the animal you're planning to adopt. This is especially true for abused/maltreated animals who were rescued and for those left by their original owners without turning over documents regarding their lineage and health.
You might not get the animal you want. Adoption counselors in animal shelters are strict when it comes to screening prospective pet owners. You might find your application rejected if you fail to pass the screening, or if another individual interested in the same animal has been deemed more capable of taking in a pet.
