After thinking things through, you decided to adopt a pet. You browse through pet classifieds and narrow down your list of animal shelters to those that are nearest your location. You have assessed yourself, your finances, and your living space and you've come to the conclusion that yes, you can take home one pet from among the numerous cats and dogs in one of the shelters in your locality. The question now is, what are the other things you should know and prepare for before you visit the nearest center? Read the rest of this article to find out.
First, are you really ready to be a pet owner? You might think you are, until you realize that having a pet dog or cat is a huge responsibility that you need to carry for years. To assess if you can really adopt an animal, consider the typical lifespan of a dog and a cat. On the average, a dog can live to up to 15 years; a cat, 20 years. With these figures in mind, try to visualize your life for the next 2 decades vis a vis your short- and long-term goals. If you see yourself still with a pet after such a long period of time, then you are ready to adopt one.
Second, brace yourself before you enter an animal shelter. It is preferable that you already have a clear idea of the kind of pet you would like to adopt; otherwise, you might end up having too many choices which, in turn, might lead to you not being able to adopt any one of the animals you shortlist. Once you are certain of the kind of pet you would want to take home with you, head to the shelter. It is crucial to emphasize here that in most animal rescue centers and shelters, you can expect that the animals have already been: (1) examined for any health problems; (2) given adequate medical attention (includes administration of vaccines and spaying / neutering); (3) screened for temperament issues and separation anxiety; and (4) tested for specific traits like aggression. Just to be sure, though, you might want to seek a counselor's help when you are in the process of looking for a pet, or ask the shelter directly about these things.
Third - and this is still in connection with the second tip - prepare for a screening yourself. The shelter staff will likely inquire about your lifestyle, your home, and your take on sensitive issues related to pet ownership in order to gauge your ability to care for an animal. If you have been deemed a responsible pet owner, you will be allowed to take home the animal you chose, provided that you have met all other prerequisites (such as paying the adoption fee and completing paperwork).
Pet adoption is a serious matter, as evidenced by the fact that more often than not counselors in animal shelters are really passionate when it comes to finding good homes for the animals they take in. Make sure that you have the same passion for caring for animals before you take on the responsibility of being a pet owner.
