When you eat a meal and your body doesn't require all the calories, it turns the extra ones into triglycerides. These are a type of fat that is stored in fat cells, but circulate in the blood. Should the body require energy between meals, hormones release them into the system.
They are not only important to maintain good health, but also act as a good gauge of heart health. A person with a high level can have an increased chance of heart disease. It may possibly also mean that they are suffering from metabolic syndrome.
This is caused by the joint presence of high levels of triglycerides together with high blood sugar, low HDL or good cholesterol, excess fat around the waist and high blood pressure. If you take a blood test to measure your cholesterol, your triglycerides are also measured. Normal is less than one hundred and fifty, up to two hundred indicates borderline to high, while the high band goes up to five hundred and anything above that is classified as very high.
When should you take a test? That depends on the individual in question and such things as their age, family history and general level of health. In order to assuage any doubt, it is best to check with a doctor.
Amongst the reasons for high readings are certain medical conditions. People with underactive thyroids and kidney disease are particularly prone, as are those suffering with poorly controlled diabetes. It is also possible that you will have high readings if you are taking certain medicines such as beta-blockers, estrogen, birth control pills or steroids, to name but four.
Regularly eating more calories than the body requires is another cause. This in turn can lead to obesity, and such people are definitely vulnerable. Imbibing too much alcohol is also a dangerous habit. While there are no symptoms for most people, those who have the problem as a result of genetics may observe fatty deposits under the skin.
Triglyceride levels can be lowered through various means of self-help. Medicines are only used when all else fails, and your doctor will do his or her best to advise you how to lead a healthier life before going down that particular path. Become more active and decrease your intake of sugars and fats while maintaining a weight that your doctor feels is suitable for your age and height etc. Also, cut down on alcohol and quit smoking.
