The hair is considered as the crowning glory because aside from the fact that it is up above people's heads, changing the way it is styled dramatically changes the way a person will look. That concept is usually played, abused and gaga over. Some like it long; others go crazy with it being short and there are quite a number who has gone from one style or length to another that is its exact opposite. But whatever preference they have in mind, one thing is for sure: they all have to deal with hair growth.
They say growth is something no one can put a stop to. Ask how powerful that is to a parent who has been caring for his child in his young years. They'll tell you how time flies. The same can be said with our hair. Hair growth has three phases: anagen, catagen and telogen. The whole head of hair we have doesn't necessarily go onto a certain phase together. Each strand has its own time in each phase of the cycle. When a strand has completed its cycle, it gives way to the birth of a new strand.
Hair growth starts in the anagen phase. It is also known as the growth phase. Its beginnings root in the papilla. In it cells divide to generate new fibers. It is said that the longer the hair stays in this stage, the longer it gets to be. It is said that the hair can stay in this phase at an average of 2-8 years. But when it decides it is the end, a signal is sent which jumpstarts the catagen phase. The catagen phase is the transitional phase. In it, the follicle renews itself. The hair follicle shrinks when this happens and the papilla separates itself from the blood supply. During this phase, the hair stops growing. After the transition phase, the hair rests. Telogen is what this phase is called and it lasts for 1-4 months. Then it all comes back to anagen phase after. When this happens, some shedding occurs because the "old" hair is pushed out by the new strand.
With these facts in mind, people would pretty much know what to do to work on that style they've been eyeing. So if long and flowing hair has always been a dream, you have to take advantage for when your hair is in its anagen stage. The hair is very much like our skin. To care and nurture it, do as how you would care for your skin: eat the right foods and exercise. Much like catching two birds with a single stone, isn't it? Another factor that plays a main role in hair growth is the hormones. In women, it is estrogen that gets to turn on the red light that will signal the catagen phase. On the other hand, androgen determines the rate of speed of hair growth in the anagen phase. On an average, hair grows at about half an inch every month, that is six inches in a year.
