Snowkiting is one of the fastest rising power sports today. It is an outdoor winter sport that uses a kite's power to pull a snowkiter on snow or ice. In this aspect, it is similar to kitesurfing but different because it uses skiing or snowboarding footwear. Unlike in other alpine sports such as skiing wherein the person can only go downhill, a snowkiter can travel both uphill and downhill using the wind's different directions. Snowkiting was first used by explorers who were journeying in the arctic regions. Members of polar expeditions used kites to pull their sleds at record speeds. It was in the late 1990's when adrenaline junkies started designing power kites equipped with precision steering, safety controls and other special features. What resulted was snowkiting-a power sport that integrates the elements of kitesurfing, snowboarding, skiing and wakeboarding in bringing out the fun of the winter season.
The power sport is regarded as a cross between snowboarding and kitesurfing. In snowkiting, it all starts with the wind blowing on the kite, exerting kinetic energy and then making it move. Using special equipment, the snowkiter hangs on to a bar connected to the kite. This way, the snowkiter is able to use the kite's speed to slide along the direction of the wind. The kite control bar held by the snowkiter is also similar to the tow rope used in wakeboarding and waterskiing. However, the bar used in snowkiting allows the rider to steer the kite in a preferred direction and to adjust the speed. Typically, a rider can travel to as fast as 30 mph using the kite's power, regardless of the snow being natural or man-made. With just a 10 mph wind at the very least, a good kite can launch a snowkiter to more than 50 feet up in the air for a truly invigorating experience. Extreme snowkiting enthusiasts even launch themselves over cliffs and hillsides, using their kites as parachutes to slow down the descent. Either a snowboard or ski can be worn as footwear, depending on what is more comfortable for the snowkiter. Nonetheless, sports enthusiasts who are looking for more excitement in their rides eventually choose the snowboard due to its flexibility and ease of use.
Snowkiting has become quite popular and is usually done in the same places where people go to ski or snowboard. There are many famous snowkiting spots in Switzerland, Russia, Canada, Iceland, Sweden, Norway, Austria and U.S. Since snowkiting is considered an extreme sport, it can be dangerous without the proper gear, techniques and practice. Snowkiting is a good power sport for daredevils and people who are looking for an one-of-a-kind and breath-taking experience that will remain etched on their memories for a lifetime. For people who want to try out snowkiting, most ski resorts have instructors that can teach customers about the basics of the outdoor sport. Modernized equipment, better safety precautions and community expertise have made the sport easier to learn by people of different skill levels, including kids.
