Snowkiting is categorized as a power sport that can give anyone a rush of adrenaline. It is an outdoor winter sport that is similar to skiing, snowboarding and kiteboarding. People who are fond of alpine sports or wakeboarding should have enough reason to try out snowkiting. Using the wind to propel the kite, a rider can travel at an exhilarating speed of up to 30 mph. With a good kite and a minimum of 10 mph wind, riders can launch themselves 50 feet in the air and safely land by using the kite as a parachute. Like all extreme sports, snowkiting can be quite hazardous. Nevertheless, with the right snowkiting gear and adequate technique and practice, snowkiting can remain safe for riders of any skill level.
For starters, snowkiting has two basic requirements. First, the person should learn how to fly a two-line kite. An aspirant should develop kite-flying skills, including launching and landing the kite properly. In finding the right trainer kite, a 3-meter foil kite is generally more than adequate for a 180 pound person using 20 mph winds on ice or compact snow. Second, an aspiring rider should have complete and good quality snowkiting gear. It always helps to get advice from experienced snowkiters regarding riding style, weight, place to ride and right snowkiting gear to use.
It is important to take note that a gear setup that works for one may not work for all. For instance, advanced riders will likely use a bigger kite that may hard for beginners to handle. Aside from skill level, finding the right gear also depends on several factors including rider's weight, snow conditions, purpose and wind speed. As a rule, deep snow demands more power than ice, which requires almost none. Also, riders with goals to high jump or beat speed records will obviously need more power than more casual riders.
As a wind sport, the fundamental snowkiting gear would obviously be the kite or sail. Different snowkite types that fly on two, three or four lines include open cell foils, leading edge inflatables, water relaunchable foils and basic framed stunt kites. Foil kites are easy to setup, can be launched in reverse, durable and more affordable. One disadvantage with foil kites is that they tend to collapse and behave erratically with strong winds. On the other hand, inflatable kites have simple relaunch, enormous depower range, built-in safety system and are more stable in gusty winds. However, they are not very durable and can easily be damaged by sharp sticks or brushes when flying on lightly covered terrains. Meanwhile, framed stunt kites are decent entry-level kites. They are the kites of choice for training smaller kids who weigh 60 to 100 pounds. Albeit pricier, foil kites are preferred by many experts for their ease of setup and portability.
A rider should also pick the right ski or snowboard. Depending on preference and level of comfort, a rider can use either a ski or snowboard as footwear. For safety, gear such as helmets, ice claws, harnesses, pads and winter clothing should also be used when snowkiting.
