Snowkiting is an outdoor winter sport that uses the movement of a wind-blown kite to tow the rider on snow or ice. The sport uses skiing or snowboarding footwear; otherwise, it is very similar to kitesurfing in most aspects. Snowkiting fuses the various traits of skiing, snowboarding and kitesurfing to provide an adrenaline-charged experience to riders.
In snowkiting, the rider holds on to a specialized kite control bar that is connected to the snowkite. The control bar used in snowkiting can be likened to the tow rope used in wakeboarding. Using the kinetic energy transferred from the wind to the kite, a snowkiter can go downhill or even uphill, depending on the course of the wind. The fact that it is not restricted by gravity differentiates snowkiting from other alpine sports. Kite bar in hand, the snowkiter would typically ride at a velocity of 5 to 30 mph using the kite's power. With just 10 mph of wind and a proper kite, a rider can jump upward to about 50 feet up in the air. Some sports enthusiasts even launch themselves hundreds of feet in the air by gliding over cliffs and atop hillsides, and then using the snowkite as parachutes for an unscathed descent.
It was 1982 when Wolf Beringer devised the shortline Parawing system for skiing and sailing purposes. The system were found extremely handy in arctic expeditions wherein these wind-powered kites were able to pull sleds over great distances at high speed. In the 1980's, Ted Dougherty and Steve Shapson separately began making foils for kiteskiing. It was Shapson who demonstrated the sport of kiteskiing in different countries including Gemany, Poland, Stizerland, Finland and Turkey. In the 1990's, sports enthusiasts tweaked with existing kite models and added features such as precision steering and safety capabilities so that they can be used for sports purposes. Soon after, some small French and American groups opened the doors for modern freestyle snowkiting that people know today. The French crew Semnoz started hosting snowkiting events at the Col du Lautaret and other mountainous grounds in Europe. Meanwhile, adrenaline junkies in the U.S. started using snowkites on frozen lakes and snow-covered fields. They experimented on various jumps and tricks using the flat ground, rails and sliders.
In the past decade, the sport of snowkiting underwent major innovations. Foil kites are now de-powerable, more high-tech and specifically designed for snowkiting. Technology has made power kites easy-to-use by people of different skill levels and kiting backgrounds. In fact, snowkite technology has seen such great improvement that snowkites have been used recently to cross huge snowfields and the island of Greenland at record speeds. In snow-covered regions such as Utah and Norway where there are active snowkiting communities, enthusiasts are documenting their efforts at freestyle snowkiting in films like Something Stronger and Dimensions. Snowkiting is also popular in Russia, Canada, France, Iceland, Switzerland, Austria, Norway, Sweden and U.S.
More advanced equipment, qualified trainers, community expertise and safety practices have greatly eliminated accidents related to snowkiting. Nowadays, even kids can be taught and trained to ride the snowkite. The better features and safety capabilities of snowkites have made them suitable for long expeditions, alpine glides, freestyle tricks, cliff jumps and whatever purpose the rider may have in mind.
