Almost any diet plan that you follow will allow you to lose weight - why then do millions of people find it difficult or impossible to keep the weight off? I've known friends who've tried every diet plan they ran across - even the wacky ones like "Cabbage Soup Diet" - yet they're still over-weight.
Why is this? Why is it so difficult to keep the weight off?
There's two basic reasons - and here they are:
Number 1: Many diet plans are not realistic - for example, the Cabbage Soup Diet - how can you possibly imagine going through life eating Cabbage Soup every day? Let's face it, a diet isn't a few days, a few weeks, or even a few months long - it will last the rest of your life. We gained this weight because of our lifestyle, and until we permanently change our lifestyle, we'll have weight problems. There are many diet plans that will provide temporary weight loss - but because they aren't scientifically sound, will not work for the longterm. Low Calorie diets, for example - did you know that your body will adjust it's metabolism to work with whatever amount of calories you're feeding it? This explains why some of your friends do just fine on a 3,000 calorie day, while you end up gaining weight on 800 calories a day (and constantly feeling starved while gaining weight!!). Other diets - such as low fat diets, can sound reasonable - but dietary fat is not body fat - and the two have nothing in common.
So a diet plan must be realistic in order to provide you with permanent weight loss, and not just temporary satisfaction.
Number 2: The food industry only has three ways to make more money:
1. Raise Prices...
2. Find More People To Sell To...
3. Or Sell More Food To Its Existing Customers...
Guess which one is easier to do? It's difficult to raise prices... finding more customers is constantly being done with advertising - but selling more food is quite easy... it's done with sugar. If you make your food particularly tasty - people will buy more of it, they gain more weight, they can now eat more, and so they end up buying more.
It's a vicious circle. The food industry has no reason whatsoever to provide you with healthy and nutritious food - and most people are not taught (or motivated) to look for such food. The diet industry is certainly not interested in you losing weight, for if you did, they'd be losing their best customers.
So how can you escape these interest groups and learn the truth about food? You can't do it in school, and there's so much garbage out there that it's difficult to weed out what works from what doesn't.
The ideal diet will not leave you starving all day, it will allow you to have a bloated "I'm full" feeling, and it will be tasty enough to allow you to enjoy your meals.
Does such a diet exist? Of course it does! (And I've been following it for several years now... and 70 pounds slimmer!)
Here's the answer: Atkins.
It's both effective, and it's a diet that you can live with for the rest of your life. I can sit down to a meal of steak & lobster, dripping with melted butter, and toss in a few vegetable sides, and watch the lady at the next table over, crying over a small salad. I'm losing weight, and she's stuck at 240 pounds...
To get the best results, you must do some research, and learn how to eat properly - what you're allowed to eat, when you should be eating, when you can 'cheat', and why you need to.
