Believers in the prophetic abilities of the late Baba Vanga were excited late last year when an attack by North Korea on South Korea threatened to plunge the Korean peninsula into a state of war that could potentially even include nuclear attacks. This scenario was precisely what the Bulgarian prophetess had predicted would take place, before her death in the early 1980s. She even gave the date November 2010 as the month that war would begin.
Subsequently, however, it seems that the danger of war has, at least for the moment, been defused; with North Korea calling for talks with the South and increased inter Korean cooperation in the future. According to American intelligence, North Korea's nuclear capabilities are still in a relatively early stage, which would further suggest a reduced ability for a Korean conflict to spread outside the peninsula.
The greatest deterrent to a nuclear war is probably the fear of the dire consequences that would result. While North Korea is a stalwart, dedicated communist country, the extent of devastation that would result from an American nuclear counter-attack would be immense. Whole sectors of the North Korean population would be wiped off the face of the earth in an instant, with much of the populace suffering the severe pains of radiation sickness and bodily deformation that was seen after Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
The extremity of nuclear war compared to any earlier form of conventional war is the major driving force behind the modern system of diplomacy and aggressive conflict resolution efforts frequently spearheaded by the United Nations and other countries. Yet paradoxically, the very countries with the largest stock of nuclear weapons such as the US and China are the most involved in the rounds of conflict resolution. In that way, the very efforts to negotiate become an extension of nuclear war, with the countries holding the largest stock of nuclear weapons expecting to get the upper hand in the negotiations, and to win settlements in their favor.
Nuclear diplomacy is the wild card in the struggle between North Korea and America because North Korea appears to have no intention of giving in to American pressure. And since the whole thrust of modern diplomatic efforts is shaped by the nuclear realities, there is a type of momentum built up with countries striving behind the scenes to build up their nuclear arsenal to gain greater and greater levels of diplomatic power. One wonders if the huge stocks of atomic and hydrogen bombs will reach a critical mass, to use a nuclear concept, where the desire to use them will override the fear of the consequences. This becomes even more of a question as the generation of witnesses and survivors of the Japanese atomic attacks die off, making it easier for the world to forget the horrors of atomic war.
There is an important concept that is relevant to the consideration of the failure of Baba Vanga's prophecies to take place as predicted. Many religions teach that when a prophet makes a negative prophecy the recipient still has the chance to repent and ward off the horrible fate. Perhaps the subject of the prophecy can experience the ill consequences in some other way. A person who was destined to die in a nuclear war might survive and subsequently develop cancer that requires radiation treatment.
While Baba Vanga's prophecies appear to have been carved in stone, another spiritual leader who predicted that devastation might come to world in 2012, the end of the Mayan long count calendar, left the door open for mankind to repent. Friend G. a California mystic, made a series of prophecies about earthquakes and tsunamis that would strike the world between 2005 and 2010. According to Great Sun, author of the Viking release "Super Life Secret Codes," every one of Friend G's predictions came true, including the location and date. Friend G. subsequently warned about dire calamities that might strike the world in late 2012 when the current cycle of the Mayan long count calendar ends.
Great Sun pointed out, however, that the potential exists for disasters to be averted or lessened by repentance and human effort. "The world the Earth and the Universe, " he wrote "are composed of many changeable elements. " And, he adds, "the relationship between humans and the Universe makes everything changeable."
True prophets are not magicians but rather keen observers of life. The state of prophecy is born out of a supreme dispassion about life, a type of approach that enlivens clarity. The fact that war has not broken out in the world is not, in my opinion, a negation of the validity of Baba Vanga's prophetic abilities; rather, it is the result of man's adaptability and response when faced with hideous consequences. What is not happening right now in Korea and the world is as dynamic and interesting as it is unpredictable.
