It's the time of the year again to sit down and make New Year's resolutions. We must decide what things we did last year that we won't do again or what things we didn't do that we will do next year.
How boring life would be, if it wasn't for cycles and times for renewal. Life would stretch out endlessly from the day of our birth to the day of our death, an endless chain of activity, day in and day out. One psychologist speculated that if it wasn't for the fact that life is broken down into hours, days, weeks, months and years man would ultimately become so overwhelmed by the vastness of the Universe he would end up standing stock still in amazement at eternity.
Fortunately for us the various cycles of our life give us a handle on the Universe. Modern man is unlikely to become dazzled by the seemingly endless creation, because our moments to contemplate such a cosmic fact are carefully tucked away into neat packets. At night, when the stars come out, we take time out to rest from our endeavors, and some people spend pleasant moments gazing at the stars. At week's end, some may take a few seconds or minutes to contemplate the fact that we live under the canopy of seven continually moving celestial bodies from which the days of the week get their name. On New Year's Eve, we celebrate the complete passage of the Earth around the Sun. This is a frightening cycle because one year is a geometrical fraction of our entire life span so in some ways the day is a reminder of our mortality. And maybe for that reason some people choose to get drunk and not think about it. Others, however, wisely take time to contemplate the significant events of the past year, in both their personal and social spheres, and to make their resolutions for the coming year.
Not long from now, our generation will be privileged to take part in the end of the longest calendar cycle known to man. On December 21, 2012, the Mayan Long Count Calendar will reach its conclusion. This long cycle celebrates the 24,000 year virtual progression of the sun around the zodiac constellations, which is actually caused by a wobble in the Earth's axis. This wobble makes it look like the sun appears at a slightly different place in the zodiac each year on the first day of spring.
This day is is the end of a really long era and it will be a great time to contemplate the vastness of life, and use the increased wisdom and perspective gained thereby to make resolutions about the future. But what kind of resolutions can we make in the face of such an immense stretch of time that spans over thousands of human generations. For example, a mere 5,000-6,000 years ago writing became popular. Will you resolve that neither you nor your future offspring will ever write anything you or they regret? Space travel has advanced so much in 50 years that it is hard to imagine the advances that will be made in the next 24,000 years. Will you resolve that your offspring shall never forget the Earth when they travel to Pluto or beyond?
Great Sun, author of the recent Viking release "Super Life Secret Codes," has suggested that the most important resolution man can make, in this age, is to resolve to come back in harmony with the Universe. In his book, he presents "secret codes," which he says are essential tools for modern man wishing to log in, as it were, to the Universe.
While the great day is still two years away, there certainly will be much talk and discussion about it in the news and in the media. So now is not a moment too soon to begin thinking about that unique opportunity you will soon have to make the biggest New Year's Eve resolution of your lifetime.
