2012 prophecies of doom are filling the Internet, and readers are forced to sift the truth from the fiction. Many responsible voices from the scientific and Mayan religious community pooh-pooh the end of the world predictions. Most accredited astronomers and astrophysicists state unequivocally that there is no known stellar occurrence that is expected to cause a serious destructive event on the Earth in late 2012. In the same vein, most responsible Mayan religious leaders deny that the end of the Mayan Long Count Calendar cycle will be connected with any type of cataclysmic event.
On the other hand, other prolific web writers continue to counter these responsible assertions. Writing against the background of growing media coverage of natural disasters that do occur, some of these authors describe archaeological finds of Mayan artifacts, which use language that suggests a cataclysmic event will take place in late 2012. Some writers note that we don't even have the ability to predict when the natural disasters we do have will occur. Other than the law of averages, what is to stop 10 tsunamis like the Boxer tsunami from occurring in one day and causing, as a result, a serious wobble of the Earth on its axis, for example.
There is yet a third approach to correlating the Internet data about 2012. There are social researchers who analyze patterns of Internet chatter and relate it to subsequent physical occurrences. Based on their years of social research, they are able to recognize patterns of chatter, which portent the approach of important crisis events. They believe that the increased posting about 2012, on the Internet, indicates a likelihood that some untoward event will occur in late 2012.
How should a responsible person respond to these ongoing web discussion? Should Internet readers automatically listen to scientific and Mayan religious advice and dismiss the doomsday phenomena of 2012 altogether? Should he remain open-minded to the remote possibility that something might occur? Should he take 2012 doomsday prophecies seriously or should he look at the phenomenon in some other way?
No one can say for certain, what kind of day December 21, 2012 will be. The people planning to have lavish doomsday parties at the beach or "I survived 2012" parties, the next day, may be the happy winners. Significantly, regardless of one's expectation about the day, an important fact worth noting is that December 21, 2012 is the end of the longest astronomical cycle known to man; and it is occurring in our generation.
Think about it for a moment and you will realize that any thought about outer space, about the vastness of our galaxy, about the vastness of time, enlarges our perspective, our wisdom and ability to deal with life on a day to day basis. Cycles of time are important to all of us and broaden our horizons. After a week cycle ends, including the week-end, people go back to work refreshed and with renewed vigor. At the end of a year cycle people take time off from work, celebrate, and make new resolutions and return to work with a new perspective.
The Mayan cycle is the end of a 24,000 year cycle and is thus that much more powerful, as a stellar event. Furthermore, while year cycles celebrate the movement of the Earth around the Sun, a relatively near by stellar phenomena, the Mayan cycle celebrates the procession of the equinoxes and the alignment of earth with the center of the Milky Way, an astronomical phenomena involving deep reaches of outer space.
The contrast of the ancient pristine purity of outer space, with its measureless stretches of Universe little changed from the first milliseconds of creation, to our embattled polluted planet, full of factories spewing waste into the air, chemical pollution coming from myriad sources and cities that serving as citadels of our advanced technological progress, is astounding. Perhaps this can help to explain why there is such interest in predictions and movies about the destruction of civilization. People may have a need to return to the natural Universal order.
On the other hand, some people believe the talk of destruction is a metaphoric and refers to the destruction of religious institutions, social institutions and patterns of thought that will be giving way to a new cycle, to new values and ideas, and a new paradigm of relating to the Universe. Some people talk about a combination of physical and metaphorical destruction.
In his book, 'Super Life Secret Codes," author Great Sun takes an even more advanced look at this problem. He sees the decision as to whether the catastrophic destruction of 2012 will be physical or mental is an individual one; as he believes there is a living connection between every soul and the Universe. Great Sun suggests the nature of this connection is and will be elucidated through examination of the capabilities of technological inventions. Radios, for example, teach man that "invisible waves" exist. Telecommunication teaches man that this invisible communication is organized into channels and frequencies. Remote control triggered dynamite teaches man that explosions moving buildings and earth can be triggered by invisible waves from a distance. Why should the interaction between man, the inventor of this technology, and the universe be any different?
To learn more about these ideas, read what Great Sun has to say in his new book "Super Life Secret Codes," recently released by Viking Press.
