A number of people have asked about how I transport my folding bike on planes. I did a whole lot of research on the net to find out how others achieved it and it did actually come down to not wrapping the bike up and taking a chance with the check-in desk or to buy a hard case and transport it in that. Brompton have got a B bag which is specific to transporting the bike inside of a soft bag which will roll up when you get to your destination and then may be buckled to your bike. I purchased a B bag and decided to buy some 5mm compressed foam to wrap the bike in before placing it inside the bag. This provides lots of padding to keep the bike safe from harm whilst it's in transit and handed over to the baggage handlers. The bag has a shoulder strap and wheels making it very transportable inside the airport. The only additional precaution I take is to ask for a fragile sticker for the bag. Whether this makes any difference or not I'm unsure. The one thing I really do avoid is taking the bike on a budget airline. It is difficult enough to get your hand luggage on these planes!
Having now travelled by air together with the bikes on eight occasions I am confident that packing the Brompton folding bike in a soft padded bag is reliable and I have never found the bike damaged in any way. If I'm touring together with the bike then I arrange to stay in an upmarket hotel where they'll happily stow the padded bag in the luggage room for the duration of my trip. I will complete the tour on my bike returning to the beginning and hotel by train. I have always succeeded to make these arrangements and discover it's ideal for self guided cycle tours. Most not long ago i rode from Berlin to Copenhagen and have just returned from Malta where my spouce and i spent Christmas checking out the island by folding bike.
Brompton have within the last year brought out a hard case for traveling by plane and this could be a alternative to the Brompton B bag. It would definitely provide secure and safe packaging for the flight and when coupled with a trailer could be used instead of panniers on your arrival. It may be possible to incorporate a trailer frame just like the Bike Friday trailer system to permit the suitcase to become the trailer. Probably the most effective trailer option for the Brompton is currently the Carry Freedom Freedom City trailer that is light weight and packs into its own bag making it particularly portable. Hitching at your bikes axle isolates the trailer from the bikes twisting and turning, making the load feel lighter than if this were in panniers. The height adjustable handle always keeps your trailer level, while its elastomer cushions your luggage.
So there are a number of methods of taking your folding bike on cycle tours abroad by plane. I have now flown with the bike to five countries and never experienced any harm to my bike and that was flying it in the soft Brompton B bag. If Brompton would only come up with a suitcase trailer then that has to be a superb option but I think that may come in time.
