Richmond was founded in 1673 by William Byrd I who was given a land grant on the banks of the James River and the area around the Falls. The Falls represented the highest navigable point on the James River and trade and settlement beyond it was restricted to those hardy frontiersmen who made a life trading with Native American Indians and trapping. Richmond was on the extreme edge of Western civilization and of the embryonic nation which would emerge some two hundred years later.
Byrd was an Indian trader himself, and prospered top the extent that a fort was built to protect the settlement and the trading business. William Byrd II took over in 1704, but it was not until 1734 that he founded Richmond which was laid out by the Major Richard Mayo. Byrd named the new town after Richmond on the Thames in England, because the view bore a striking resemblance and similarity to that found in Virginia. By 1742, Richmond had been incorporated as a town and proceeded to become the focus of politics which became increasingly polarized with the debate and calls for independence.
Virginia governor, Patrick Henry made his famous, "Give me liberty or give me death" speech in 1775 at Richmond. A black mark in Richmond's history was the burning of the town by the traitor, Benedict Arnold who commanded British troops in 1781. He need not have bothered himself, for by 1782, Richmond had fully recovered and was a bustling city once again. In 1788Thomas Jefferson designed and built the State Capitol Building sitting stop Shockoe Hill and dominating the town overlooking the Falls and which is the oldest English-speaking legislature in the United States.
Richmond became an important military and commercial center of the Commonwealth of Virginia and a major port which was crucial for trade with Europe, and the viable survival of the new nation itself. Iron works and mills sprang up in and around Richmond, and some of the largest and oldest companies in America emerged from the development of Richmond.
With the Civil War, Richmond assumed greater prominence both in political life and as an engine of the Confederacy's war machine. Richmond became home to the Confederate Congress, taking over the State Capitol Building while the city also provided the leading manufacturing center possessed by the South. Today, the Tredegar Iron Works are a testament to the city's industrial energy in producing firstly, arms and munitions but finally, rail road and locomotive engines which helped lead the revival of the country after the Civil War.
Reconstruction occurred quickly with Richmond after the Civil War, and the city became a major commercial center and the gateway to the South for many industries and necessities of life. A range of industries formed with Richmond as the center including tobacco, cotton and drug distribution as well as acting as a major manufacturing base for the rail roads.
The wealth which has been heaped upon Richmond in terms of money and history has led to a rich cultural and historic legacy for the city today. Richmond is a time capsule which contains the history of the United States, and has captured the memories and landmarks of the major events which have helped to shape our nation as we know it today.
