It is a pediatric mantra that babies should be breastfed until six months, better for a year or more. But this is not quite easy, forcing women to result to formula milk whenever breastfeeding is impossible, such as in cases of low milk supply, or impractical, such as when mother and child are in a public place or if the mother is away. While there is nothing wrong with formula milk (in fact there are individuals who were nursed exclusively with formula milk but grew to be indistinct from those who were nursed with breastmilk most of their infant life), the mother's breastmilk is still the best for her baby, as it has the nutrients and antibodies that protect the baby better from diseases (e.g. ear infection, diarrhea) and ailments resulting from prematurity (e.g. allergies, asthma, diabetes, sudden infant death syndrome) compared to formula milk. Breastmilk is also easier to digest than formula milk, hence breastfed babies are less likelier to have digestive problems than those nursed with formula. Breastfeeding also prevents obesity in infants, and encourages a closer and deeper bond between mother and baby. As babies are immensely curious of things, but whose tender young age does not permit a lot of experience, breastmilk is the best alternative. It introduces babies to the different tastes available, for example- in fact, breastmilk is so complete it is said to contain the "fifth taste". Best of all, breastmilk does not cost a cent, while formula milk can be a little expensive, and breastfed infants tend to be healthier than formula-fed babies, so parents can save more by crossing out medical expenses from the budget.
Breastfeeding is not quite solely a baby tip but is also advantageous for mothers, which makes it better than formula-feeding at all possible levels, notwithstanding that the latter might be more convenient and practical in certain situations. For one thing, breastfeeding helps mothers shed the pre-pregnancy pounds by burning calories and shrinking the uterus (active breastfeeding tells the body that it does need an enlarged uterus anymore, nor that it needs to store as much energy as it did during pregnancy). But what can be better than the sense of infinite closeness with the baby? In this way breastfeeding helps mothers overcome post-partum blues. Studies also show that breastfeeding protected mothers from uterian and ovarian cancers, as well as cardiovascular diseases.
In light of the sheer importance of breastmilk, one of the many baby tips mothers must remember from experts is how to express breastmilk. This can be done with either a breast pump or with one's own hands. Breastmilk can be refrigerated for up to 48 hours, and three months in the freezer (write the date it was expressed on the container). To thaw frozen breastmilk, run the container in cool water; longer in the refrigerator, and do not re-refrigerate thawed milk. In this way mothers can still feed their babies breastmilk even when they are outside or when they need to be away for a while.
