If your baby is not being cute or sleeping, he/she's likely to be shrieking unceasingly and it's driving you at your wit's end, especially at 3 o'clock in the morning. Lest you stress yourself out beyond reason - the baby crying is a normal occurrence and not even something to stress over - here are some baby tips for dealing with the crying:
Remember that babies cry for a reason, and that it is the only means of their expression. According to an article by Pinky McKay, a tendency to cry is characterized by signs such as wriggling, anxious facial expressions, flailing arms, changes in breathing, among others. Unless the baby is afflicted with colic, a condition in which the baby cries frequently and incessantly for no apparent reason (a more "medical" definition would be crying that lasts for more than three hours, three days a week for more than three weeks; colic is also characterized by other serious symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea), some of the top reasons why babies cry are hunger, tiredness, discomfort from soiled diapers, temperature, etc., aches, loneliness and boredom. Parents simply need to read and be constantly vigilant of the signs and symptoms of why the baby must be crying, and respond to their perceived needs as soon as possible.
One thing that parents, especially mothers, can do is keep the baby close. Always hold and carry him/her; if outside, putting him/her in a sling (however, slings are not recommended for newborns and very young infants; it is best to ask the doctor). The closeness to the mothers puts the baby at ease as it simulates the security of the womb, and in this way the baby's reasons for crying is lessened, if not easily averted, as the mother can easily respond. Babies usually cry for an easily discernable reason, such as hunger, discomfort or a soiled diaper, and immediate response to these needs usually does the trick.
Studies show that breastfeeding and feeding on demand, as opposed to formula milk and feeding according to fixed hours, conditions babies to be more satisfied and less likely to cry. Also remember that babies are extremely reactive to temperature - they are susceptible to temperature changes - and disturbing stimuli such as shrill or loud noises. Skin color and temperature are handy indicators of the baby's condition - if s/he is a little flushed, s/he must be feeling discomfort, or worse, a little sick. Frequently massaging him/her - massage is not called 'touch therapy' for nothing - satisfies the baby's need for touch and security, in addition to nourishing his/her little body in a way that it contributes 20% to his/her weight.
Unless the baby is in a potentially serious condition, these crying baby tips are actually not anything new. So if you've changed his/her diapers, dressed him/her comfortably and just fed her with a bottle a while ago and can find nothing more that needs to be addressed, it may be time for you to get off work, spend more time with your baby. This means being close to him/her and giving her not just the attention s/he wants but the attention s/he needs, including thoroughly looking him up and down to see closely what s/he could want or what could be wrong with him/her. The baby might be feeling a pain or sickness from the inside which only a trip to the doctor can diagnose and solve.
