Ancient man had no experience with sugar – it was an extremely rare commodity – only rarely possible to have in the form of honey. Even the forms of carbohydrates that are readily and quickly transformed into sugars, such as all forms of bread – are a relatively recent innovation in human history.
It was, in fact, just around 100 years ago that sugar became so readily available that most people in civilized society could regularly add it to their diet. And only in the last 30 years or so that sugar has become such an overwhelming part of our diet... in many overt and hidden ways. 'Corn Syrup', for example, a very common ingredient in so much of America's prepackaged foods, is simply a cheap source of sugar.
Interestingly, archeologists can determine very quickly whether an unearthed ancient human skeleton was a 'hunter/gatherer' or from a civilization that ate bread. The hunter/gatherer humans were taller, and in generally much better health. While it's common knowledge that our diet isn't great for the teeth, it's less commonly known that the American diet full of sugar and non-nutritional carbohydrates also leads to a whole host of degenerative diseases.
Diabetes, of course, is the most well-known and best documented result of our eating habits, and frighteningly, it is now not uncommon to hear of children contracting diabetes. If America's eating habits are so bad that even children are affected, what hope do the rest of us have?
Fortunately, we have what children do not – an ability to learn, to reason, and to change our eating habits. (and no parents forcing us to eat a particular way) But if we don't use these abilities, our health deteriorates, and our excessive weight is just the outside indication of our poor inward health.
Sugar, while it will provide energy for the body to function, doesn't provide any other nutritional value such as vitamins, minerals, or fiber. And since it's an extremely compact form of energy – it's easy to 'overdose' on sugar – your body wasn't designed to handle the amount of sugar that we can easily obtain today. Your body must produce insulin to handle the overdose, and over time, your body's insulin loses it's effectiveness in dealing with the tremendous overflow of sugar that our American diet gives us. This is, in layman's terms, what diabetes consists of – the inability of our body to regulate sugar levels in our blood system.
Any diet that doesn't aim at regulating sugar ingestion in our daily lives isn't a diet that will be good for you in the long term... and if you want to keep your weight and health optimum, you must learn about the harmful effects of the world's slowest poison, and learn to greatly decrease your consumption of it.
