There are many myths and misconceptions about weight loss – and you are most likely to believe at least one of these myths. Indeed, I expect many of you to disagree with these assertions – but you should certainly do a little research and consider these myths:
1. Dietary Fat causes body fat – this seems self-evident, after all, fat is fat, right? The truth is quite different... first, you have different types of fat, but even if you were a cannibal, and ate human fat, it still needs to be run through the human digestive process – and it is not converted directly into stored fat in the body. This is important to remember, dietary fat and human body fat are not identical, and one is not converted into the other. Keep in mind the Eskimo's – who for centuries have had a high proportion of whale blubber in their diet – whale fat. Yet you don't see fat Eskimos.
2. Weight is an equation, calories in equals weight gain. This common myth disregards metabolism – people have been known to gain weight on 1,000 calories a day, and have been known to lose weight on 3,000 calories a day. There are too many other factors involved for this to be a simple equation. Restricting calories as a weight loss method often creates a condition of near constant hunger. This constant hunger makes low calorie diets to be the least effective of all diets.
3. If you don't exercise, you can't lose weight. Again – simply not true. It's certainly desirable to exercise – it will force the body to a higher metabolism, and cause the body to burn fat, and to not store fat – but you can lose weight without exercise. As a corollary to this – many people think that if you're not running a marathon, or lifting weights in a gym, you aren't exercising. Again, wrong – you can exercise simply by walking around the block. 'Exercise' does not have to be meaningless physical movement – it can be as simple as mowing the lawn, taking out the trash, painting a room, making dinner. These are all physical actions that can force the body to burn energy.
Losing weight is not an easy thing to do – since it involves changing your lifestyle – you cannot keep doing everything you're doing now, and expect your weight to magically come off, but drug manufacturers rely on this expectation to sell you the latest greatest 'weight loss in a pill' – yet they never seem to work, do they?
