The differences in the amount and types of gases present in the tube influence the color temperature and intensity. This makes the halogen light light-bluer, redder, greener and the like. When voltage is first applied to the lamp, the argon content is readily ionized. This facilitates striking the arc across the positive and negative electrodes. The heat will then vaporize the mercury as well as the metal halides. As such, light is produced in a very bright manner. Most of the time, the lamp is attached to an auxiliary power source called the ballast. This supplies the appropriate voltage and current to start the lamps.

Metal halide lamps have varying uses. Special ingredients can be placed inside the tube to convert the lights into materials suitable for photocopying, scientific usages as well as plant growth. Certain varieties are ideal for slide projections and for movies. Indium is particularly added since they produce an intense, small high brightness arc. In instances where a diffuse light source is desired , the outer jacket of the lamp is coated with a white phosphor component.
