Before convert M4A to AAC, it may important to give background of the two audio file for the M4A and AAC file compression be fully understood. First it was the WAV format which is the codec (compression|decompression) of the common Compact Disc. But as the data required to store and archive music in WAV format is huge, lossy file compression codecs was introduced to be able to encode audio files in smaller file size. For a very long time and some even considered until today, MP3 file was considered as the universal lossy compression codecs. For a very good reason that .mp3 extension has a unified version. Then comes the next generation AAC which was intended to replace the age old .MP3 lossy compression codecs. Putatively, audio quality output with AAC encoding was better that MP3 with a 96 kbps encoding in AAC format is equivalent to a 128 kbps encoding in MP3 in terms of audio output quality. And due to to the better sound quality it produces, it is now widely gaining acceptance. Among which who made it more popular was Apple as they made it the native format for their iPods.

It is important to mention that AAC is just an improved lossy encoding scheme of an audio file. The encoding scheme designed to replace MP3 due to its better sound output. And because its improved encoding scheme, it became as the main encoding method of MP4 or Moving Pictures Experts Group 4, the lossy file compression codec for videos. And to make the distinction that the file is intended just for audio, M4A was created. So basically M4A is just a subgroup of MP4 but both of them has a similar encoding scheme. So when you convert M4A to AAC, what you really did is that you just removed the container of AAC which is the M4A and left the file to a raw audio stream of AAC without the container.

The confusion between the two might have been brought up with the advent of .mp3 lossy file compression codecs as MP3 files has a unified extension file name whether the file plays video or audio. audiophiles got used to it that they thought the same principle applies with the next generation AAC and M4A files. That just like its precursor, different file extension, also meant different file formats which is not the case with AAC and M4A lossy file compression codecs. This mix up was furtherly aggravated by some audio players that lists the other file format while disregarding the other when in fact it can play both files.

So basically, AAC is just the lossy compression scheme while M4A is a mere file extension. And as such,files encoded in AAC compression scheme can assume an AAC, M4A and MP4 file extension. So they are really just the same. And to make the explanation simpler, MP4 and M4A are just containers of AAC. This understanding is necessary before you convert M4A to AAC.
