Many people get confused by article marketing – and fail to differentiate between the two main purposes of article marketing. Before you read any further, can you name the two main reasons to write and publish articles?
Most IM'ers (Internet Marketer's) understand the benefits of traffic that you can get from writing articles, but the secondary purpose is to gain backlinks. These two results of article marketing can be combined, but they can also be separated – and when you write an article for one purpose, you may be wasting your time if you don't understand the different purposes.
Why would you be wasting time? If you are looking for traffic, you want to take the time to do your keyword research, write a title with your targeted keywords, and shoot for 300-500 word article that is both readable and interesting.
None of that is required for backlinking purposes – indeed, you've wasted much of your time researching for a keyword to target, and taking the time to write a good article. For backlinking purposes, you don't even need to have an article that is on the same topic as the website you're promoting!
If you've spent any amount of time at EzineArticles (or the Article Directory of your choice) you've probably run across articles that have absolutely nothing in common with the topic of the website they link to – and you've just discovered someone who knows that the topic of the article doesn't matter for backlinking purposes. You've just discovered an article that isn't designed for traffic generation at all – but only for backlinking.
Now, since a well researched and written article always provides a backlink as well as reader traffic to your website – why would you ever want to write articles designed only to provide a backlink? Simple – it's far quicker. You don't need to do keyword research, you don't need to finely craft your article to make it interesting, and it need be only as long as needed to be accepted by the article directory.
Articles designed only for backlinks can be (and often are) the 'garbage' of the Internet – but what do you care? You've gotten a perfectly valid backlink to your website... and done so in far less than half the time it would take to do proper keyword research, topic research, and writing a lengthy and readable article. This is a good use of 'PLR' (Private Label Rights) material – just rewrite enough to be unique, make it as short as you can - while meeting the minimum length needed to be accepted, and post it to your favorite article directories (the more, the better!)
If you're trying to write a good article for traffic generation – you must locate good "long-tail" keywords (three or more words) that not only get a decent amount of traffic each month (I like to see at least 300 per month), and that the competition on page one of Google shows that you can compete successfully. I like to see at least a couple of PR0 sites, no 'TLD' sites in the first few positions, and at least one, and even better, several articles from article directories ranking. A TLD – for those who don't know the 'lingo' – is a "Top Level Domain" – For example, 'Amazon.com' is a TLD – but if you saw 'amazon.com/Kindle-Wireless-Reading-Device-Display/dp/B0015T963C' – this is not a TLD, it's an individual page on a website – and you have the opportunity to rank higher.
Remember – TLD's are generally 'authority' sites – and will be difficult for you to rank above them – so if your long-tailed keyword phrase has TLD's in the first few slots of the SERPS (Search Engine Result Pages), then pass it by, and look for another keyword phrase.
Now that you know the difference between the two main purposes of Article Writing – you'll be better prepared to write articles, and avoid wasting your time! Good luck!
