It is always wise to look into what your competition is trying to do to beat you as well, including which keyword phrases they are focusing on; this helps you decide which keywords to stay away from too. If you are fighting with competitors who already rank high on generalized keywords like "cars" there is no reason for you to work hard to beat them when you can just use other keywords and phrases instead.

Benefit from location

You can also improve your chances of winning a substantially better page ranking result if you incorporate your location to the keyword or phrase that you are attempting to use. For example, if you are running your operation out of Minnesota, you can add the word "Minnesota" to your keywords to specify them to your area. You would focus on "Minnesota used cars" as opposed to just "used cars". The only issue with this method is that localizing your keywords gives users and potential clients the idea that you are running a local business that they can go to in person.

Benefit from niche

Always try to choose the keyword that you specialize in, or at least the one that offers you with the most profit. Remember that you want to offer the keyword that best describes your business, but if the search volume of users is leaning towards one that isn't your principle product, then you can actually decide to work with that keyword instead, just as long as that keyword is still related or relevant to your site's focus.
