The Packaging (Essential Requirements) Regulations - Any business that makes packaged produce, brings packaged goods into the UK, makes packaging equipment, sells packaged items, or otherwise introduces packaged items into the UK marketplace must comply with the Packaging (Essential Requirements) Regulations.
Producer Responsibility Obligations - Businesses that deal with an excess of 50 tonnes of packaging every year and whose annual turnover is over £2 million must operate within the Producer Responsibility Obligations as well.

* Minimise packaging weight and volume (based on to safety, hygiene & consumer concerns).
* Ensure packaging can be recovered. Part or all has to be able to be recycled, reused, composted or energy from waste.
* Design packaging to be more durable and thus reusable.
* Keep disposal related environmental damage to a minimum.
* Keep tight restrictions on toxic substances.
* Ensure levels of cadmium, lead, mercury and hexavalent chromium or any combination of these does not exceed 100 parts per million by weight of the total unit.
* Save records for a minimum of 4 years. In addition to the regulations stated in the Essential Requirements you must also:
* Get registered with the local environmental regulator.
* Pay for the recovery and recycling of certain quantities of packaging waste.
* Submit electronic packaging recovery notes (ePRN's or ePERN's for exported packages) in to your environmental regulator.
* Provide information to customers concerning the reuse, recovery and recycling of packaging and the collection facilities available.

You can cut down on waste products by following the new Packaging Regulations by using these suggestions.
Reduce
* Buy in bulk when refilling your stock.
* Try to source products that are not over-packaged or which use packaging that does not match the above regulations, for instance, containing hazardous substances.
* Keep your total amount of packaging items used to a minimum.
Reuse
* Put your polystyrene filler, jars, jiffy bags, cardboard boxes, envelopes, etc in a special storage area where reusable items are kept.
* Make an effort to reuse packaging when possible.
* Use shredded documents to fill packages.
Recycle
* Maximize use of easily recyclable products like cardboard and additional biodegradable products.
* Source recycled material packaging if you can.
* Recycle materials which can no longer be reused whenever you can.
Record
* Make notes on your reduced, reused, and recycled packaging efforts.
* When you buy boxes or receive waste collections from a carrier, mark it in your records and save all Waste Transfer Notes for a minimum of 2 years.
* Try to keep watch on how much packaging is used and review progress every few months.
* Keep all this information for a minimum of four years. It will also form a key part of your EMS (Environmental Management System), which shows your company's commitment to reduce its environmental impacts.
