"The Expendables", "Eat Pray Love", and "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" first faced off during their August theatrical run. During that time, the action flick "The Expendables" lorded over the summer box office competition and, interestingly enough, hauled in more female viewers over the Julia Roberts starrer "Eat Pray Love". "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" attracted much of the younger demographics, but its box office performance ultimately paled in comparison over the two features. All 3 face each other again as new DVD movie releases for the month of November.
Released earlier this month, "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" is a comedy film from "Shaun of the Dead" director, Edgar Wright, and is based on the popular graphic novel series of the same name by Bryan Lee O'Malley. In the movie, Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) meets the girl of his dreams named Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). But in order to finally win over Ramona, Scott must first defeat "The League of 7 Evil Exes" who will stop at nothing to control Ramona's love life and kill all those who stand in their way. When "Scott Pilgrim" opened in theaters, it managed to finish 5th during its first weekend run but eventually dropped out after the 2nd week. Dismal box office performance aside, the film was praised by critics and viewers who enjoyed the movie's amusing visuals and humorous storyline. The movie performed better as one of November's new DVD movie releases, vaulting to the top spot when it became available on DVD.
Currently, the movies up for grabs in the new DVD movie releases department are "The Expendables" and "Eat Pray Love".
In "The Expendables", Sylvester Stallone crafts a nostalgic throwback to the golden age of action movies when names like Stallone, Lee, Lundgren, Rourke, Willis, Schwarzenegger, and the like headlined some of the decade's most popular action movies. This time Stallone adds some new but familiar names into the action-packed mix: Jason Statham, Gary Daniels, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, and even Steve Austin. During its release, the movie received an impressive audience turnout despite the mixed reviews it earned. In the movie, an elite group of mercenaries led by Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) called the Expendables are tasked by a mysterious man named Mr. Church (a cameo by Bruce Willis) to infiltrate a South American island and overthrow a brutal dictator, General Garza (David Zayas). Ross realizes that there might be something more to their mission when he learns that Garza is being backed by a rogue ex-CIA man, James Munro (Eric Roberts).
Finally, there's "Eat Pray Love" starring Julia Roberts. One of the most anticipated movies of the year, "Eat Pray Love" is based on the memoirs of writer Elizabeth Gilbert (portrayed by Julia Roberts) as she travels the world in order to find herself again after a painful divorce. The movie debuted at #2 after "The Expendables", prompting many observers to point out how both Roberts siblings were pitted against one another. Directed by Ryan Murphy, the critics praised the visuals of the film and Julia Roberts' performance, though there was mixed reactions about the material of the film.
