Though 2010 will most likely go down as the year when Christopher Nolan and Leonardo di Caprio's team up in "Inception" boggled the minds of audiences all over the world and the year when many franchises like that have the captured the imagination of young and old viewers alike for years have all came to an end, what's not frequently talked about is how many underrated films struggled financially in the box office but managed to make the list of many critics and reviewers' best movies of 2010 list.
Of the many films released this year, 3 financial underdog features stood out from the pack: "How to Train Your Dragon", "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" and "Kick Ass". Initially deemed a financial failure compared to other animated features, "How to Train Your Dragon" has the unusual distinction of managing to reclaim the top spot in the box office during its fourth and fifth week, after slipping down the ranks, based solely on positive word of mouth recommendations. In the cases of "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" and "Kick Ass", though both movies had enough hype going for them, they only managed to break into the top 10 during their opening week and struggled to maintain their hold throughout.
Based on British author Cressida Cowell's popular book series, "How to Train Your Dragon" focuses on the unlikely friendship forged between a notoriously clumsy Viking teenager, Hiccup (Jay Baruchel), and the fearsome Night Fury dragon he affectionately names Toothless who are the sworn enemies of the Vikings. Though many might say it features an unremarkable story, its story has a lot of heart in it to go along with the stunning visuals-two things which helped the film draw in more viewers during its run. Also in the cast are Gerard Butler, Craig Ferguson, America Ferrera, Jonah Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, TJ Miller, and Kristen Wiig.
Much of the controversy surrounding "Kick Ass" centers on the violence displayed in the movie and the infamously foul mouthed 11-year-old Hit Girl. People immediately forget that it has one of the year's most engaging yet audacious storylines that packs quite a punch. In "Kick Ass", superhero wannabe Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson) takes it upon himself to fight crime just like his comic book heroes. He dons a costume and becomes the mysterious Kick Ass who eventually earns the ire of the city's crime syndicates. With the help of Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage) and his daughter, ruthless vigilante Hit Girl (Chloe Grace Moretz), they take on the city's biggest drug lord Frank D' Amico (Mark Strong).
A frequent inclusion in many best movies of 2010 list, "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" has all the makings of box office hit: a big budget, a talented cast, an outrageous storyline based on Bryan O' Malley's wildly popular graphic novel, and a fearless director in the person of Edgar Wright who was also behind the zombie flick "Shaun of the Dead". So what went wrong? Not a lot of people could appreciate how the movie unabashedly embraces its inner geek. Starring Michael Cera as the titular Scott Pilgrim, he must first battle the "7 evil exes" of the girl of his dreams, Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) in order to finally get the girl.
