Most adults in the United States take one or more diet suplements. Some take them everyday while others only take them on certain occasions. Diet suplements are also referred to as food supplements or nutritional supplements. These supplements are intended to increase your nutrients intake. These are usually taken to provide for the nutrients that you are unable to consume or get enough of. Diet suplements usually contain essential nutrients, which are needed by the body. A diet supplement could either be a vitamin, a mineral, fiber, or an amino acid-some supplements contain all of these and other substances as well. These supplements may contain calcium, iron, potassium and zinc among many other vitamins and minerals.
Dietary supplements can come in tablet, capsule, powder or liquid form. They could be derived from chemical processes or they could be taken from herbal or botanical sources. For instance, supplements that are produced through chemical purposes include calcium and iron. On the other hand, examples of herbal or botanical supplements include garlic and Echinacea.
In other countries diet suplements are regarded as food while in some countries they are considered as drugs. In the United States, the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 has provided a definition for dietary supplements. According to this act, a diet supplement is a product that is meant to supplement the diet. In addition, a diet supplement should also contain one or more of the following: a vitamin, a mineral, an herb or other botanical substance (exempting tobacco), an amino acid and/or a concentrated metabolite extract.
The same act also gave a set of criteria to be able to classify the product into the "dietary supplement category." One of the criteria states that the product must be intended for ingestion whether it be in pill, capsule, tablet, powder or liquid form. The product must not be represented for use as replacement for food and it should be labeled as "dietary supplement." Furthermore, the product should have "supplemental facts" panel on its label. This panel will show you how the amount of nutrients contained in a dietary supplement. This panel also shows the active or the key ingredient of the product.
Dietary supplements can be found in pharmacies and health stores. Some department stores and grocery stores also carry these diet supplements. You can also order dietary supplements through mail, the internet or TV shopping.
Dietary supplements can play a significant part in the health of some people. For example, anemic patients are required to take iron supplements and pregnant women are encouraged to take folic acid to avoid congenital birth defects. Some people are even required to take a diet supplement all their lives. Diet suplements are indeed helpful especially if you find it difficult to include a certain nutrient in your diet.
Taking a dietary supplement might sound appealing. But you have to remember that, just like any other drug, dietary supplements can be harmful if taken inappropriately. Consult your doctor first before you start taking any supplement. Do not take doses higher than the ones required or prescribed. Stop the use immediately if you suffer from unwanted side effects. And the best thing you could do is to do your research. Read the label and find out everything you could about that certain brand and its ingredients. After all, you'd be the one getting the benefits-or the damages, if you're not careful-from the diet supplement.
