Eczema is often referred to by medical experts as the itch that rashes. For some reason, certain portions of your skin itch and cause you to scratch incessantly. Soon, you will have red patches of bumpy rashed skin. Take it further and you will have skin that is inflamed and maybe even blistered from all the scratching. Self-medication could make your skin condition worse. It would take more than your calamine lotion to cure your eczema. In fact, there are no known cures for eczema. There are solutions, though, that you can resort to for some relief of your eczema symptoms. You have to make sure that you are diagnosed first before you start any eczema treatment. There are some side effects from some of eczema treatments that you do not want to have to experience. Furthermore, if your eczema has worsened due to bacterial infection, you would want to be prescribed with the right medication to cure your infection.
It is not uncommon to find people with eczema. There are several types of eczema that you can suffer from. A great number of people experience atopic eczema at some point in their lives. This type of eczema is commonly found in babies and the elderly. Unlike allergic or irritant eczema, it is often not easy to determine the cause of atopic eczema. This type of eczema is mostly attributed to hereditary factors. People with immediate family members who have bronchial asthma as well as hay fever are believed to be more prone to developing eczematous eruptions. As it is in the blood, so to speak, there really is no way to permanently cure atopic eczema. The eczema treatment that is usually recommended even by dermatologists is a combination of medications and self-care practices that aim to diminish the appearance of and the irritating effects of atopic eczema.
Upon diagnosis of eczema, your dermatologist will most probably suggest a topical corticosteroid or a hydrocortisone formulation that you can apply to areas of your skin with eczema. Steroidal preparations could have side effects; and are not recommended for use for long periods. Normally, dermatologists will prescribe low potency preparations first to ease the inflammation and itching. If these less potent formulations do not work as expected, they can move up to more potent formulations. Prolonged use of these preparations can cause skin atrophy. Therefore, you should follow your dermatologist's instructions as to the length of time you should apply a corticosteroid or hydrocortisone product on your affected skin. If the rash has open skin, your dermatologist might find it necessary to prescribe anti-bacterial or antibiotic medication as well.
Apart from an effective eczema treatment medication, there are self-care practices that you can perform to stop the itching and the rashes that characterize eczema. Of utmost importance is keeping your skin hydrated all the time. Ensuring that you get lots of water will help you achieve this. Avoiding heat is also one way by which you can avoid dry skin. When you take a shower, make sure that your water is not too hot. Too much heat causes the water to evaporate instead of staying on your skin. Using mild emollients before toweling off would also help prevent the evaporation of water from your skin.
