It is no fun having swollen and itchy skin. Many people often suffer these symptoms that point to a common skin condition called eczema. There are various types of eczema with varying manifestations. The kind of eczema treatment you should look for if you have this condition would depend on what type of eczema you are suffering from. It is important that you first identify the type of eczema you have before trying to treat it . This kind of skin condition requires care and attention especially as it is generally characterized by sensitivity to harsh chemicals and other irritants. Consult with a dermatologist to have yourself diagnosed, and then find the right eczema treatment. Here are some of the most common types of eczema that you might be afflicted with:
Atopic dermatitis. This type of eczema is also referred to as infantile eczema or flexural eczema. It is an allergic reaction that runs in families where there is a history of bronchial asthma. The irritated skin patches usually appear on the head and scalp, the neck, and the insides of the joints. These patches might be dry and scaly or it could bubble up and have fluid secretions. If left untreated, the affected area could thicken in what is called as lichenification. Eczema treatment for this kind of dermatitis often involves multiple regimens that include medication, moisturizing, and itch management.
Contact dermatitis is caused by either an allergen or an irritant. Substances that the skin gets in contact with like metals and chemicals are the usual culprits . These are often aggravated by exposure to sunlight and perspiration. It is easier to cure contact dermatitis than atopic dermatitis. A dermatologist will usually conduct a patch test to see which substances are causing the eczema breakouts. Identifying what particular substance results in eczema will solve the skin problem as simply avoiding these allergens or irritants would often stop the breakouts.
Nummular dermatitis is often attributed to skin injuries, bacterial infections, and dry skin. The skin patches in nummular dermatitis are either coin-shaped or oval lesions. Although there is no known cure for this kind of dermatitis, there are ways to ease their effects. It is important that tests be done in order to determine if a skin disorder is indeed nummular dermatitis. Once diagnosis has been made, steps to avoid irritants or aggravating factors should be taken. In some cases, ultraviolet treatment has been found to be effective in preventing the worsening of this type of eczema.
Seborrheic dermatitis are similar to dandruff. In infants, this type of eczema appears as the cradle cap. The crusting that occurs with this type of eczema is often seen in the eyebrows, the face, and the trunk. This is also usually associated with the overproduction of skin oil. Seborrheic eczema treatment includes medicated anti-dandruff shampoos and corticosteroid creams or lotions. Among the potent ingredients that these solutions contain are ketaconazole, selenium sulfide, and salicylic acid. Using these solutions about twice or thrice a week often results in the disappearance of the eczema. Eventually, seborrheic dermatitis wanes when skin oil production is controlled.
